The spiral wound membrane element (10) comprises a perforated central tube (16); one or more membrane sleeves (12), each sleeve (12) including two membrane sheets (18) enclosed at two edges (18a, 18b) around a feed spacer sheet (14) and wrapped around the central tube (16); a permeate carrier sheet (20) attached to the central tube (16) at a first edge (20a) opposite a second edge (20b); and a seal (23) on third and fourth edges (20c, 20d) of the permeate carrier sheet (20). The method comprises introducing two solution with different solute concentration to two sides of the spiral wound membrane sheet (18); establishing a concentration gradient between the first and second sides; communicating a first solvent from the first side to the second side to remove a foulant located on the second side of the membrane sheet (18); and collecting a waste stream that contains the foulant.

摘要： Disclosed is a spiral wound membrane element (10) that provides two permeate streams through a permeate carrier sheet (20). The spiral wound membrane element (10) is sealed such that the only communication with the permeate carrier (20) is through a membrane sleeve (12). The first permeate stream flows spirally inward and the second permeate stream flows in the opposite direction, spirally outward. The permeate carrier sheet (20) is sealed at two edges so that the permeate streams can only discharge from opposite, unsealed edges of the permeate carrier sheet (20). The first permeate stream may be collected in a central collection tube (16) and the second permeate stream may be collected in a peripheral region of the membrane element (10).

The central core element comprises an outer exhaust conduit defining an inner volume and a gap starting at a first end thereof the outer exhaust conduit and extending towards a second end of the outer exhaust conduit, and an inner porous exhaust conduit comprising a first section disposed within the inner volume defined by outer exhaust conduit and a second section configured to abut and seal the first end of the outer exhaust conduit. The first inner porous exhaust conduit section is configured to be disposed within the first portion of the membrane stack assembly.

摘要： A filter has a spiral flow (SF) membrane element (10) combined with a second filtration element (60). The second element (60) is preferably in the form of a hollow tube and the SF element (10) is located inside of the second element (60). Both elements are contained within a common housing (42). The housing (42) has an inlet (44) and a filtered water outlet (46), which are separated by the two elements in series. Examples are illustrated in which the pre-filter is a cartridge filter (such as a depth or surface filter), a packed bed and another spiral flow element. In a filtration process, feed water travels radially through two filtration elements in series. Essentially all of the water treated by the second element may also be treated by the SF element (10). The SF element (10) may separate the feed water into permeate and concentrate streams.

摘要： The present invention provides a spiral wound membrane distillation module. The spiral wound membrane distillation module comprises a central core element with an interior channel and a multilayer membrane assembly spirally disposed around the central core element. The multilayer membrane assembly comprises at least a feed carrier layer, at least a vapor permeable, liquid-tight membrane layer and at least a vapor spacer layer. The vapor space layer is imparted with a negative pressure. The membrane distillation module is configured to enable the feed solution to flow within the feed carrier layer along an axial direction of the membrane distillation module or enable the vapor to flow within the vapor spacer layer along an axial direction of the membrane distillation module when the membrane distillation module is used to divide a feed solution into a concentrated liquid and a vapor. A method using the spiral wound membrane distillation module to carry out membrane distillation is also provided.

The method comprises: providing a central core element comprising at least one concentrate exhaust conduit and at least one permeate exhaust conduit; disposing a first portion of a membrane stack assembly comprising a permeate carrier layer, a membrane layer, and a feed carrier layer within the central core element such that the concentrate exhaust conduit and permeate exhaust conduit are separated by the first portion of the membrane stack assembly; radially winding a second portion of the membrane stack assembly around the central core element; and sealing the wound assembly comprising two opposing end surfaces made of the membrane stack assembly by applying an adhesive on both end surfaces of the wound assembly; and applying a negative pressure inside the central core element so that the adhesive penetrates into the membrane stack assembly.
