    • A receiving system 100 is disclosed which includes at least one antenna 101 providing a plurality of antenna beams providing signal diversity between communicated signals. A first processing branch 103 is included for processing a first plurality of signals appearing within a first plurality of the antenna beams. The first processing branch 103 includes a plurality of signal paths, some of which include delays 105, each receiving a one of the first plurality of signals from a corresponding one of the first plurality of antenna beams. Delays 105 apply a predetermined amount of delay proportionate to the corresponding one of the beams. First processing branch 103 further includes a combiner 106 for combining the first plurality of signals after output from the plurality of signal paths. A second processing branch 104 is provided for processing a second plurality of signals appearing within a second plurality of the antenna beams. Second processing branch 104 includes a plurality of signal paths, some of which include delays 105, each receiving one of the second plurality of signals from a corresponding one of the second plurality of antenna beams. Delays 105 applying a pre-selected amount of delay to the corresponding one of the beams.     • Disclosed is a system utilizing a multi-beam antenna that switches the beams to a CDMA demodulation receiver in such a way that the best beams are selected. The transmit path takes the traffic channel outputs from the CDMA modulators and maps each traffic channel to the subset of beams that have the best path to the mobile in the forward link. Accordingly, the system operates to reduce interference on both the forward and reverse links, as well as to increase the capacity of both the forward and reverse links. The system also is capable of providing flexible dynamic shaping of the cell and the sectors by mapping the appropriate overhead channels on the forward link and the reverse link in different combinations of beams to sectors in order to shape the cell. Adaptive arrays may be utilized to form radiation patterns, for which the azimuthal width and/or length of a sector may be adjusted by way of adjustments of the relative amplitude and phase of signal components of signals at antennas of a phased array adaptively controlled according to communication parameters such as information indicating the quality of the communication channel on that sector, interference from other channels or the number of calls serviced in particular sectors.

    • A system and method are disclosed for dynamically sizing sectors of a multi-sectored radiation pattern. The disclosed invention teaches the use of multiple narrow beams composited to form a radiation pattern. Signals associated with each such narrow beam may be provided to inputs of a scan receiver or signaling radio which inputs are associated with a particular sector of the radiation pattern. The number of narrow beam signals provided inputs associated with a particular sector defines the azimuthal width of that sector. By altering the number of narrow beam signals provided each such input, the azimuthal width of the sectors may be adjusted. The disclosed invention also teaches the use of attenuators in the signal path between the narrow beams and the scan receiver or signalling radio. By adjusting these attenuators, the effective length of the sectors may be adjusted.

    • A communications base station is installed at a selected new location and the base station, prior to going “online” monitors the wireless traffic from other base stations within interference range of the new base station's coverage area. The new base station also monitors the wireless traffic between mobile devices within its coverage area and these other base stations. Based upon these monitored conditions, as well as other known conditions, the new base station then determines the transmitting parameter configuration it should imply in order to achieve a desired optimization between capacity and coverage area. After the new base station is online, a central control can monitor the entire network to determine if any additional changes are necessary and if so the new transceiver, or any other transceiver, can be instructed to monitor itself with respect to interference and to take corrective action to improve overall network coverage and capacity.

    • There is disclosed a system and method for improving wireless system capacity by reducing collisions where the Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) is high in systems having a channel reuse of 1. By ordering the channel assignment in each of the interfering cells according to a pattern, for example, according to the distance from a base station (determined by power levels), the mobile stations will become paired on the same channel in a manner to reduce interference between them. In one embodiment, this intelligent assignment is accomplished by assigning mobile stations in one cell such that the mobile station having the strongest signal is assigned channel. A while in the interfering cell the mobile station with the weakest signal is assigned to channel A. In another embodiment, certain preferred mobile stations are assigned either interference-free channels or channels paired with weak interference mobile stations.
