Tyres, pneumatic; felloes or rims.-In means for securing a tyre cover to a wheel rim, each edge of the cover is formed with a doublebeaded edge, adapted to enter a groove in a metal rim secured on the felloe and a similar groove in a metal side-plate. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a metal rim B with channelled edges B is secured to a felloe A of hexagonal section, to which the side-plates C are secured by bolts E. The tyre is built of cords D embedded in rubber, and in canvas D if desired, wires or staples F being placed through the looped ends to stiffen the beads D'. In a modification, the bolts E may be replaced by curved metal clamping-pieces, which are secured inside the felloe, so as to embrace the side-plates C, by means of bolts which pass through the felloe and also secure the rim B in position ; or, in some forms, the clamping-device may be dispensed with, the sideplate being secured by the pull of the outer cover, which causes them to bear tightly against the inner inclined faces of the felloe. In modifications, one of the side-plates may be permanently fixed to the felloe, or the felloe may be dispensed with, the central portion of the rim B being bent inwardly to receive the spokes.

    • 10,941. Gray, C. H., and Sloper, T. May 13. Cords.-Rubbered cords are made by compressing a number of unvulcanized threads or units, which have been previously coated in any convenient manner and allowed to dry, by passing them through a suitable die or equivalent. The cords may be spirally wound externally with a thread, preferably while under tension just after leaving the die ; this keeps them from expanding and produces smaller and more homogeneous cords, as described in Specification No. 26,183, A.D. 1902 ; or they may be twisted, in any well-known way, either before or after passing through the die, and two or more such cords may be cabled together in a similar way. The opening in the die may be of any desired cross-section, preferably having a bell mouth ; a small rubber cord may be fed into the centre of the die to form a core to which the threads would be attached and round which they might afterwards be twisted. Cords may also be formed from strips of the well-known fabric used in the manufacture of pneumatic tyres, composed of a number of parallel threads embedded in or solutioned together by india-rubber, by forming them into circular or other shapes by drawing through a die or series of dies in an unvulcanized state, and such cords may be twisted or cabled together, as described above.
