A bag feeding, opening and filling apparatus comprises a support table and tape pulling unit 15 to feed a continuous chain 130 of imbricated bags, e.g. 131, to a loading position which are then opened by inflation with air and filled. The chain of bags are adhered to a pair of parallel, sticky tapes which are pulled from container 143 over rollers 73, 74 over the support table 21, twisted to run over knurled rollers 63, 64 and are crimped together by gear-wheels 30, 56. These gear-wheels are actuated to pull the tapes and bags when spring 51 is released on to valve (47, Fig. 2, not shown) starting motor 43. Air blower unit 16 operates to open and inflate bag 131 through shoot 113. Inlet 111 is closed by piston-operated gate 117, in response to cooperation of cam 125 and lever 124 on movement of tray 12. Support table and tape pulling unit 15 is pivoted at 82 and actuated by cylinder 84 in response to switch 86. The article to be loaded is placed on tray 12 which is pushed into the inflated bag, shutting off the air supply in so doing. The article is pushed from the tray 12 into the bag 131, which is thereby simultaneously stripped from the tapes, releasing spring 51 to cause the tapes to pull the next bag into position as tray 12 is retracted to allow air supply to recommence. To change the size of bags or the tape, unit 15 may be pivoted by switch 86 and the tapes released by means of toggle (57, Fig. 2, not shown) so that the chain of bags and the tapes may be withdrawn and replaced in container 143 so that a new chain may be connected. In another embodiment (Figs. 8-10, not shown), the support table and tape pulling unit (215) is fixed and the tray and blower assembly (315) is pivoted manually to facilitate application of the tapes to the front face (224) of unit (215). Tray (212) is not reciprocated, blower (210) being actuated either by spring (251) or separately. In a further embodiment (Figs. 11-13, not shown), a cartridge (400) enclosing a rotatable spool (403) is clipped on to the front face of the tape pulling unit (415) and effects the pulling of the tapes and chain of bags by means of shaft (431) and couplings (401-402).
