    • The linear brake defines a longitudinal axis (A) and comprises a tubular housing (12) for axial engagement about a post (P) and a radially deformable tubular friction sleeve (22) for axial engagement along the post, the friction sleeve located radially spacedly within an inner wall of the housing. The linear brake also comprises an annular axially convergent ball channel defined between the housing inner wall and the friction sleeve and a number of balls (38) disposed in an annular row within the ball channel, the balls being axially movable between a non-braking position in which they apply little or no radial pressure against the friction sleeve for allowing the friction sleeve to freely slide along the post; and a braking position in which the balls are wedged between the housing inner wall and the friction sleeve and apply significant radial pressure against the friction sleeve to forcibly radially inwardly deform the friction sleeve for the friction sleeve to apply friction-borne radial pressure against the post for hindering movement of the linear brake along the post. The linear brake further comprises a number of axially extending, peripherally spaced grooves (24) provided on the friction sleeve, each the ball being seated in a corresponding one of the grooves, an actuator (40) continuously biasing the balls towards the braking position and a counter-actuator attached to the housing and which selectively moves the balls into the non-braking position against the action of the actuator.

    • The linear actuator (10) comprises an elongated first band (26) wound in helical form about a central axis (11) and an elongated second flat band (36) wound on itself with its turns substantially transversely parallel to the central axis (11). The first (26) and second (36) bands are capable of taking retracted and expanded positions whereby in the retracted position the bands (26, 36) are spaced from each other. First fastening means (34) and second fastening means (40, 42) are longitudinally disposed along the first (26) and second (36) bands respectively, whereby the second fastening means (40, 42) is capable of cooperating with the first fastening means (34) to releasably interlock the first (26) and second (36) bands. Spacer means space the turns of the first band (26). Drive means cause rotation of the first (26) and second (36) bands and the spacer means about the central axis (11). Guide means (37) guide the turns of the second band (36) towards the turns of the first band (26) to interlock the first (34) and second (40, 42) fastening means.

    • The push actuator (10) has a fixed base (12) which rotatably carries a selectively rotatable rotor (44, 46, 48, 50). A horizontal band (24) has a lower portion stacked in a helical pattern and has an upper portion engaged by the upper portion of a vertical band (30), to form a vertical telescopic column (32). The lower portion of the vertical band (30) is stacked in a spiral, separately from the horizontal band (24), the horizontal band (24) is supported on the rotor (44, 46, 48, 50) with a helical ball support track (70) along which a number of balls (72) can roll and slide, to allow substantially frictionless rotation of the rotor member (44, 46, 48, 50) while the horizontal band (24) remains rotatably stationary. A ball re-circulation unit (76) allows the balls (72) to circulate between the top of the track (70a) and the bottom of the track (70b). Upon rotation of the rotor (44, 46, 48, 50), the vertical column (32) is formed by the horizontal band (24) being lifted and its turns being spaced through its engagement on the rotating helical ball support track (70), and by each turn of the vertical band (30) being inserted between two vertically successive turns of the horizontal band (24).
