    • A system for indicating the presence of objects, where sonic energy reflected from the surfaces of objects is recognized and detected. Sonic energy pulses are periodically directed toward objects to be detected and electrical signals are generated in response to that portion of the sonic energy reflected from the object''s surface. The signals are conducted to a tuned amplifier gated at intervals corresponding to the anticipated transit times of reflected pulses. Recognition circuitry responds to reflected pulses and produces an indication of object presence when they are coincident with the gate intervals. A timer extinguishes the presence indication when reflected pulses cease to be received for a period of time commensurate with a predetermined minimum rate.

    • An electromechanical transducer is provided for producing pulses of sonic energy and respondingly generating electrical signals relative to received sonic energy wherein a driver generates the sonic pulses; and an improvement for projecting the sonic energy in a peculiar controlled pattern is a wave guide interposed at the output of the driver for controlling the propagation of the pulses by setting up substantially a line source of sonic energy which emanates the sonic energy in an operating pattern of at least a minimum intensity near the point of greatest breadth of the pattern. There has been provided an electromechanical transducer for projecting sonic energy in a peculiar pattern including a head mounted at the output of the transducer and a wave guide having a transverse slot therethrough adapted to cooperate with the head for directing the propagation of the sonic energy to substantially complete sonic coverage within a limited range.

    • Registry apparatus for generating digital output signals to a computer representing parameters necessary for computing the speed of a vehicle has been provided. The registry apparatus responds to radar apparatus which provides doppler shift frequency signals representative of the velocity of the moving vehicle. The improvement in the present invention includes an accumulator means responsive to the doppler pulses for producing a count signal representative of the number of pulses at prescribed counts. Timing cycle means coupled to the computer produces a pulsed output and generates a scan signal to the computer over a selected interval of the cycle while synchronizing means responds to the accumulator means and the timing cycle means producing a register pulse at the prescribed counts. Output means coupled to the computer stores the total accumulator count signal and the timing cycle pulses for each registered pulse since the previous scan signal and provides an output to the computer for processing the differences between the previous count signal and the present count signal and the time over which that difference occurred during the selected interval of the computer scan.

    • There has been provided remote control apparatus for generating signals over a communications means which selectively controls the actuation of apparatus at remotely located devices from a control location in accordance with the distance of the control location to the devices. The improvement includes dual range signal means for transmitting the signals over two ranges of energy having different propagation time characteristics and receiver means at each of these remotely located devices responsive to each associated range of energy for receiving the signal and generating associated outputs. Gating means responsive to the first associated output initiates the gating sequence signal having a duration relative to the propagation time of the second associated output. Output control means responsive to the gating sequence signal and the second associated output activates the apparatus when the second associated signal occurs within the duration of the gating sequence signal. There has also been included a timing means coupled to the communication means at the remote location responsive to the control signals for generating a second gating signal of predetermined duration longer than the first gating signal for each control pulse. A counter responsive to the first gating means generates an output signal after a predetermined number of registered first gating signals, the output signal for activating the apparatus at the remotely located devices. Reset means responds to the control signals, the first gating means and the timing means for cancelling the counts stored in the counter when a control signal occurs during the first gate interval and without said second gate interval thereby only control signals of a selected range of frequency are capable of driving the counter to predetermined counts for generating the output signal.

The improvement of the present invention includes an interface responsive to initiatory signals and to the direct current signals for providing an output signal, the occurrence of which relative to the initiation of the interface means gives indication of track impedance with respect to time. The present invention relates to apparatus for detecting and transmitting information relative to the impedance of an electrical system and particularly to apparatus for detecting the impedance characteristic of a railroad track circuit in order to determine the distance from a reference point to a shunt occasioned by the presence of a railroad vehicle.
