    • 1482664 Polyetherimides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 29 July 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 33388/74 Heading C3R A method of making polyetherimides consisting essentially of combined units comprises reacting substantially equimolar amounts of an alkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol MOROM and a bis-imide in the presence of a "dipolar aprotic organic solvent" (defined as having a dielectric constant greater than 20) at up to 100‹ C. and thereafter recovering the polyetherimide. In the formulµ M is an alkali metal ion; R is a C 6-30 divalent organic radical; and R 1 is alkylene, C 3-20 cycloalkylene, a C 6-20 aromatic hydrocarbon radical or an alkyl, alkoxy or halo-derivative thereof, a C 1-5 alkylene-terminated polydiorganosiloxane, or where Q is -O-, -CO-, -SO 2 -, -S- or -C x H 2x -; x is 1 to 5 and m is 0 or 1. It is stated that the use of the bis-(fluorophthalimide) enables the polyetherimides to be obtained in considerably less time and to attain significantly higher intrinsic viscosities than when using a bis-(chlorophthalimide). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,392,649.
