摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coat an internal passage of an article such as a gas turbine airfoil with an aluminum-containing coating. SOLUTION: To accomplish this coating process, a coating slurry of a mixture of a carrier component of water and a hectorite clay or a bentonite clay, together with a solids component of a source of aluminum, a halide activator, and an oxide dispersant, is prepared. The coating slurry is applied to the internal passage of the gas turbine airfoil (22) and dried. The gas turbine airfoil (22) and the applied coating slurry are heated to form an aluminum-containing coating bonded to the internal passage of the gas turbine airfoil (22). Excess coating material is removed from the article internal passage.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a surface of a nickel-base article, e.g. an internal surface (36) of a gas turbine airfoil (22) with a protective layer (40) of aluminum and at least one other element. SOLUTION: A donor alloy is brought into contact with the protected surface of the article to form the protective layer (40). The article and the donor alloy are simultaneously heated to a coating temperature that is greater than about 0.7 of the absolute solidus temperature of the donor alloy but is such that the donor alloy remains in the form of a condensed phase contacting the protected surface of the article. Then the donor alloy is interdiffused into the protected surface of the article.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a thermal barrier coating system with higher performance and lower cost than conventional coating methods, which does not give any adverse effect to environmental resistance and exfoliation resistance, by employing a thinner bond coat than conventional ones. SOLUTION: The coating system (20) comprises a ceramic layer (26), and an environmentally resistant bond coat (24) of β-NiAl for making the ceramic layer adhere to the surface of a component. A thin aluminum oxide scale (28) is formed on the surface of the β-NiAl bond coat during heat treatment. It may have an additional diffusion layer of aluminide formed under the ceramic layer (26). The bond coat of β-NiAl can contain alloy elements such as hafnium, chromium, and zirconium as well as nickel and aluminum. The powder of β-NiAl is supplied as powder with particle sizes of 20-50 μm. The β-NiAl powder is deposited by means of an atmospheric plasma spraying technology to form the bond coat with surface roughness of 400 micro inches or more.

摘要： A thermal barrier coating (TBC) (26) and method for forming the coating (26) on a component (10) intended for use in a hostile environment are disclosed. The coating (26) and method are particularly directed to inhibiting sintering, grain coarsening/growth and pore redistribution in the coating (26) during high temperature excursions by providing limited amounts of extremely fine carbide-based and/or nitride-based precipitates (34) preferably formed at defects and pores (32) at and between the grain boundaries of the TBC microstructure. The precipitates (34) pin the TBC grain boundaries and pores (32) during high temperature excursions, with the effect that the TBC microstructure is thermally stabilized. A coating (26) containing the carbides and/or nitrides can be formed using a physical vapor deposition technique in an atmosphere that contains carbon and/or nitride gases or compounds thereof, or by evaporating a source material that contains carbon, carbon-containing compounds, carbides and/or nitrides.

The first material contains at least the first metal, and the second material contains the reactive metal and at least a second metal. The second and reactive metals are combined to cause the second material to have a lower melting temperature and wider melting range than the reactive metal.
