    • A system 200 and method 600 for cooling a dynamoelectric machine 100 is provided. The system 200 includes a coolant medium inlet 210, a coolant medium outlet 220 and a fan 130 connected to a rotor 110 of the dynamoelectric machine 100. The fan 130 provides a flow of a coolant medium through the dynamoelectric machine 100. A flow control device controls 230 the amount of the coolant medium passing through the dynamoelectric machine 100 by controlling an opening area of at least one of the coolant medium inlet 210 and the coolant medium outlet 220. A winding temperature measurement system 240 measures the temperature of one or more windings in the dynamoelectric machine, and controls the flow control device 230 to adjust the opening area of at least one of the coolant medium inlet 210 and the coolant medium outlet 220, based on the temperature of the windings in the dynamoelectric machine 100 to reduce windage loss and/or control pressure of the coolant medium within the dynamoelectric machine 100.
