    • Essentially phenol-free phenol resol ethers which are bonded via o,o'-methylene ether groups are prepared by a process in whichA. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in an aqueous medium, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.5-10% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me.sup.++ ions, the latter are then removed as a sparingly soluble salt, the water present as a solvent in the reaction mixture is removed at 30.degree.-80.degree. C. in the presence or absence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols and an entraining agent, and the water of reaction formed during the etherification is separated off at 45.degree.-120.degree. C., andB. where the process is carried out beginning with the methylolation in a non-polar organic solvent, the methylolation is carried out in the presence of 0.1-0.3% by weight, based on the phenol employed, of Me.sup.++ ions, the etherification is effected at 95.degree.-120.degree. C. in the presence of one or more monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohols, with or without recycling of the distillate which passes over, and finally residual phenol in the products prepared by A. or B. is removed by evaporation in a thin film evaporator until the phenol content is less than 1% by weight.The phenol resol ethers prepared according to the invention are useful for the preparation of coating systems and for adhesives.

    • The invention relates to surface-coating binders and to their use.The surface-coating binders, which are substantially free from epoxide groups, are based on a reaction product of (A) a Mannich base obtained from one or more polyhydric phenols which are free from ether groups and contain two or more aromatic rings, and/or one or more monohydric or polyhydric phenols which contain one or more ether groups and contain two or more aromatic rings, one or more secondary amines which contain one or two hydroxyalkyl groups and which may or may not be mixed with secondary dialkylamines or dialkoxyalkylamines, and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, and (B) an epoxy resin, the reaction product of (A) and (B) additionally containing, built into its chemical structure, an olefinically unsaturated alkylphenol of the general formula (I) ##STR1## where R is a radical of 11 to 19 carbon atoms which contains from one to three carbon-carbon double bonds.These surface-coating binders are used, especially in their protonized form, for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.

    • A cathodic electrocoating binder comprises a mixture of(A) from 50 to 95 percent by weight of one or more polyadducts, polymers and/or polycondensates which possess basic nitrogen groups and(B) from 50 to 5 percent by weight of one or more amide-amines obtained by reacting monocarboxylic and/or dicarboxylic acids, or their esters, with diamines which possess one primary and one secondary amino group per molecule, the secondary amino group carrying a .beta.-hydroxyalkyl group,and the component (A) consists of one or more phenolic Mannich bases, which are obtained from(a) monophenols and/or polyphenols,(b) one or more primary or secondary amines and(c) formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, and which may or may not have been reacted with epoxy resins, and/orone or more polyadducts, polymers and/or polycondensates which have activated C-C double bonds, some or all of which may be blocked by adduct formation with secondary amines,and, instead of a mixture of (A) and (B), it is also possible to use reaction products of component (B) with component (A) or with intermediates of component (A). These binders are useful for the cathodic electrocoating of metal articles.
