    • A transport system for charging and delivering right-sign electrostatic toner to an image receiving member includes a toner conveyor having a loading/filtering segment and a delivery, segment. Each segment has a number of parallel electrodes connected to a DC-biased multiphase electric power to establish a traveling electrostatic wave to move toner along the segment. The loading/filtering segment gathers toner from a supply and feeds unipolar toner to the delivery segment. The delivery segment delivers right sign toner to the image receiving member. The traveling wave in the loading/filtering segment moves toner in either a synchronous surfing mode or an asynchronous hunching mode to the delivery segment. The traveling wave in the delivery segment moves toner in an asynchronous hunching mode to the image receiving member. The traveling wave and the speed of toner movement in the loading/filtering segment and the delivery segment are subject to control by means of the bias, amplitude, and frequency of the electric power on the respective segments. First and second toner extractors adjacent to the conveyor are electrically biased to extract therefrom, respectively, wrong-sign toner before it reaches the image receiving member, and unused right-sign toner after it passes the image receiving member.

    • A direct electrostatic printing process which is insensitive to the polarity of the toner material is disclosed. The donor member of the printing apparatus includes alternate narrow and wide electrodes. The narrow electrodes are electrically pulsed to eject toner of one polarity in proximity with an array of electrically controlled apertures in a printhead, and unused toner are returned to the donor surface with low momentum to avoid dislodgment of other toner from the donor on impact. Toner ejection is accomplished with a three segment voltage pulse, including an impulse segment to detach toner of one polarity from the donor and accelerate the toner particles toward a printhead, a zero voltage segment during which the ejected toner drifts in the presence of electric fields produced by voltages applied to the printhead and toner receiving member, and a final low voltage segment of the same polarity as the first impulse segment to decelerate toner returning to the donor to a low landing speed and thereby avoid dislodgement of other toner from the donor. The donor structure and ejector pulse renders aperture type direct printing stable for long periods of time without frequent cleaning of the printhead.

    • An apparatus and method for the delivery of electrostatically charged toner particles to an image receiving member using a traveling electrostatic wave toner conveyor. The traveling electrostatic wave toner conveyor is overlaid with barrier electrodes that divide the conveyor into parallel columns, forming isolated potential wells to receive pixel packets of toner. An ejector electrode in registry with each conveyor column modulates the quantity of toner in pixel packets that travel along the parallel conveyor columns. The quantity in the packets is responsive to the modulated voltage applied to the ejector electrode. Focusing electrodes transfer pixel packets from the traveling wave conveyor as toner jets focused onto the image receiving member. A repulsive dc bias is applied to the barrier electrodes to confine toner within the conveyor columns. Another embodiment includes an image transfer conveyor similarly overlaid with barrier electrodes. A toner supply conveyor (or four such conveyors for CMYK toners) supplies pixel packets to the transfer conveyor. An ejector electrode on the supply conveyor in registry with each conveyor column ejects toner from the supply conveyor to the transfer conveyor in response to modulated voltage. A corresponding attraction electrode on the transfer conveyor, in registry with each ejector electrode on the supply conveyor and subjected to voltage of opposite polarity, attracts toner from the supply conveyor to the transfer conveyor. CMYK toners are of equivalent particle size small enough to reduce the granularity of continuous tone images below the threshold of visibility. Multiplexing is accomplished by four ejector electrodes, positioned one ahead of another by one-fourth the transfer conveyor wavelength and energized together through a common bus electrode.
