摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a high quality rod whose refractive index can be reduced gradually from the center toward the periphery, by filling a glass pipe with vitreous oxide powder different from the glass pipe in composition in the form of concentric circular layers and by melting the powder by heating. CONSTITUTION:The space 2 of a quartz glass pipe 1 having one open end and the other closed end is filled with a prescribed amount of vitreous oxide powder 3. The powder 3 is separately produced from starting materials for glass by flame hydrolysis or thermal decomposition, and for example, the powder 3 is made of SiO2-GeO2-P2O5. The powder 3 is convertible into transparent glass by heat treatment, and the glass has an increased refractive index due to GeO2 and a reduced m.p. due to P2O5. The open end of the pipe 1 is grasped by a rotatable and vertically movable supporting tool 4. The pipe 1 is put in a heating apparatus 5 while being rotated, it is heated to a high temp. to convert the powder 3 into transparent glass by melting, and the glass is bonded to the pipe 1. The pipe 1 is then taken out and cooled to obtain a prescribed glass rod.

摘要： PURPOSE:To generate a raw material gas for glass used for preparing a base material for optical fibers, etc. efficiently without the contamination with impurities, by subjecting a solution of a raw material for glass in a raw material vessel indirectly to the ultrasonic vibration, and atomizing the solution of the raw material for the glass. CONSTITUTION:A raw material vessel 1 containing a solution 8 of a raw material for glass is dipped in a liquid tank 2 containing a liquid 9, e.g. water, and an ultrasonic vibrator 3' of an ultrasonic generator 3 is mounted in a recess 10 provided on the outer surface of the base of the liquid tank 2. The ultrasonic generator 3 is then operated to propagate the ultrasonic vibration energy from the ultrasonic vibrator 3' to the liquid 9 in the liquid tank 2, vibration propagating part 7 of the raw material vessel 1 and then the solution 8 of the raw material for the glass one after another and atomize the solution 8 of the raw material for the glass by the ultrasonic vibration. A carrier gas is simultaneously introduced from an introductory pipe 4 into the raw material vessel 1 to support the raw material for the glass on the atomized gas, and supply the raw material gas from an outlet pipe 5 to a given position.

摘要： PURPOSE:To uniformize the gas stream blasted from the nozzle of a multiple tube gas burner for the vapor-phase axial deposition of soot rod for optical glass fiber, by furnishing each flow path of the burner with a permeable gas-barrier layer, thereby distributing the flow of the gas uniformly throughout the flow path. CONSTITUTION:In a burner C having a multiple structure, and flow path 1 for injecting the raw material, the flow path 2 of inert gas, the H2 flow path 3, and the O2 flow path 4, are each furnished with permeable gas-barrier layers 6, 7, 8, and 9, respectively. The layer is made of natural fibers, synthetic fibers, etc., and hinders the flow of gas. Fine particles having diameter of about 1mum cab be passed through the layer, however, coarser particles are blocked by the layer. The burner C is attached to the vessel B, and the vapor-phase axial deposition is carried out. Even if there are turbulence, velocity difference or pressure difference along circumferential direction in each gas stream in the flow path 1, 2, 3 or 4, the nonuniformity or irregularity of the flow are eliminated by the layer, and the gas having uniform velocity distribution and pressure distribution along circumferential direction is supplied to the outlet of the burner.

A fiber arranging means 5 is moved relative to an optical waveguide chip 1 by as much as this fine movement quantity, by which the optical waveguides 13 and the optical fibers 4 are integrally aligned.

Glass layers are deposited in layers to the inner surface of the glass tube 1 by feeding the raw material gas into the tube 1 and heating the tube 1 with the burner to effect the reaction and decomposition of the raw material gas. In the above process, the fire of the burner 6 is intensified during the motion from the F point to the B point to heat the glass tube 1, and is weakened during the motion from B to F to cause the spontaneous cooling of the tube 1. The surface temperature of the glass tube 1 is detected by the temperature detector 11 moving integrally with the burner 6, and the heating temperature of the burner 6 is controlled according to the detected temperature.

The connector member 13 is formed by adhering four split bodies 13a-13d with an adhesive, in which an opening is formed at its center, and the end face is inclined. The split bodies 13a-13d consist respectively of optically transparent 'Pyrex(R)' glass, for example.

The end surfaces 5 and 7 face each other slantingly to the optical axes of the core 20 of an optical fiber and the core 21 of the waveguide element 14, the tilt angles gamma of the end surfaces 5 and 7 to a plane perpendicular to the optical axes of the cores 20 and 21 are both 8 deg., and the area of each of the end surfaces 5 and 7 is 1% larger than that of a conventional example. Consequently, lights are reflected by the core end surfaces 25 and 27 as shown by arrows B and B' and the reflected lights never travel back to the incidence side of the optical fiber.
