The sole may be formed by blow moulding a plastic tube (not shown) having a rectangular cross-section and having wall thicknesses corresponding to the walls 2, 3, 4. The inside surfaces of the chamber 1 may be formed with ridges 5, 6 which may be opposite each other as shown or staggered. The ridges 5, 6 may extend longitudinally or transversely or may be arranged in other patterns. Grooves 7 may be formed on the surface of the sole A in the same position as the ridges 5. The soles and insoles may have holes in their upper walls to provide a ventilating action as the user walks. Fig. 8 shows a ventilating sole having holes 21, a wedge heel 22 having a bellows-like shape 23 and an internal projection 24. Sports shoes and ordinary shoes incorporating hollow soles are also illustrated.

T FUKUOKA 4 Aug 1975 [30 April 1975] 32498/75 Heading A3B [Also in Division B5] A method of manufacturing footwear comprises placing a preformed section of the footwear, e.g. an upper 11, in a mould assembly 12, 13A-C, 14, providing a mould cavity 15, e.g. for a moulded sole, into which a peripheral part of the section protrudes, spacing the peripheral part from the adjacent mould surfaces by projections such as 17, 18 whereby when moulding material is introduced into the mould cavity e.g. by injection, the preformed section is connected to the moulded sole. The protruding part may have openings therethrough and the projections may provide holes in the sole. The projections may be of various shapes and comprise patterns e.g. the projections 38a 38b in a mould part 23A, Fig. 13 produce a shoe, Fig. 14 having an upper ramp 21A and moulded side sections 21B with the pattern shown. The sandal of Fig. 17 is produced by a mould Fig. 18, in which protruding portions of preformed parts 31A, 31B are held between projections in the mould cavities 30A, 30B, 35.
