    • A method of allocating a wireless communication resource to a device-to-device (D2D) pair of wireless devices may include determining an access-point interference threshold of an access point of a wireless communication network. The method may further include determining a device-to-device (D2D) signal power of a D2D signal at the access point. The D2D signal may be associated with D2D communications between a D2D pair of wireless devices. The method may also include assigning a wireless communication resource to the D2D pair based on a comparison of the access-point interference threshold with an access-point interference value where the access-point interference value is based on the determined D2D signal power at the access point.

    • A method may include receiving a communication from each of multiple machine-type communication (MTC) devices in a radio access network at a base station. The radio access network and base station may be configured to support the MTC devices and human operated devices. The method may also include determining that the communications are received from the MTC devices and allocating a first set of downlink resources in a downlink channel for future assignment of downlink data communications from the base station to the MTC devices. The method may also include allocating a first set of uplink resources in an uplink channel for future assignment of uplink data communications from the MTC devices to the base station.

    • A method for device identification includes determining a mass event has occurred in a wireless network from a reception of a plurality of signals each having a last gasp message, sampling a plurality of mapped zones associated with a base station, identifying which mapped zones are associated with a disconnected endpoint in a zone list, determining a length of time of the mass event, and selectively providing the zone list to identify disconnected endpoints based at least upon the length of time of the mass event. Each mapped zone includes a plurality of wireless device endpoints associated with the mapped zone. The sampling includes determining whether any of a subset of the endpoints associated with the given mapped zone are disconnected from the wireless network.

    • A method for device detection by a base station comprising receiving a plurality of signals over a preamble subframe from an endpoint. The plurality of signals are attempting to access an access group of the preamble subframe. Additionally, the plurality of signals are received on a random access channel using a wireless network. Further, the plurality of signals have a plurality of last gasp messages (LGMs). The method additionally comprises determining an allowable rate of collisions for the plurality of signals and determining an actual rate of collisions for the plurality of signals. The method includes increasing the size of the access group allocated to the plurality of signals having the plurality of LGMs, based on whether the actual rate of collisions exceeds the allowable rate of collisions.
