    • An optical connector (1) for connecting a plug unit (17) for holding the end face of an optical fiber (15) with an inward retraction from the leading end portion and a receptacle unit (4) having packaged therein a light receiving/emitting element (12) to transfer an optical signal with the optical fiber (15), to each other through a clearance between the end face of the optical fiber (15) and the light receiving/emitting element (12).     • A connector coupling structure includes first (4) and second (9) connectors including housings (40,90). A raised portion (13) is formed at a front end side of an inner surface of the second connector housing. When the first and second connectors are coupled, the raised portion contacts an outer surface of the first connector housing, forming a clearance (14) between the outer surface of the first connector housing and an inner surface portion of the second connector housing. An inner case (8) is slidably received in one of the connector housings. A projecting portion (12) is formed on a side of the inner case and a notching piece (6) having a pawl (11) is formed on the one connector housing to be releasably engageable with the projecting portion. When the terminals and terminal-inserting holes of the two connectors are connected with one another, the inner case slides so that the engagement of the pawl and the projecting portion is released.

A selected one of the conductors to which the connection terminals are connected is cut at a position between the connection terminals, and the connection terminals disposed at both sides of cut parts of the conductors form respectively different circuits. An independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a harness by installing each connector at predetermined position in the longitudinal direction of cable such that the connection terminals and conductors are connected, and cutting a selected one of the conductors at a point between the connection terminals that are disposed along the conductor.
