    • 611,927. Pile fabrics. FUHRHOP, W. F., and ISSUM, J. B. H. van. Feb. 28, 1946, Nos. 6279, 7145, 16163, 16438 and 37530. [Class 142(iv)] A method of manufacturing a pile fabric consists in assembling carded or similarly processed fibrous substance in superposed layers, so that the fibres of the layers are .disposed longitudinally or approximately so, applying a consolidating medium to the fibrous layers before, during or after assemblage so that adjacent fibrous layers are separated by layers of consolidating medium, the resulting consolidated block being cut transversely of the run of the fibres into sections, a backing being applied to each section, and the consolidating medium being removed from the fibres. In the form shown, a web 1 of fibrous material is conveyed from a carding or other processing machine and after having a binding agent applied thereto by a sprayer 4 and being dried by a heater 5 is impregnated with a consolidating medium by sprayers 8 and then assembled in superposed layers 19 in a reciprocating trough 18. The block is then cut transversely into sections and each section has a backing, e.g. of plastic material applied thereto, after which the consolidating medium is removed. The fibrous substance may be stretched before impregnation with the consolidating medium. The consolidating medium may, however, be applied in the form of soluble or thermoplastic powder, flakes or sheets during the formation of the superposed layers. In a modification. the fibrous substance is divided into strands which, after being impregnated with a binding agent and dried, are wound on spools which are arranged in predetermined order in a carrier. The strands are then drawn from the spools, impregnated with consolidating medium and assembled in superposed layers. The spools may be wound with strands of different colour so as to produce a pattern in the fabric. In a further modification, the backing is rendered porous by combining with the strands of fibrous substance, filaments which resist both the consolidating medium and the backing, but are capable of being removed by a solvent after the consolidating medium has been removed. The spacing of the superposed layers may be determined by rods, or by regulating the thickness of consolidating medium supplied. Specifications 588,548 and 600,119 are referred to.

    • A growth-promoting preparation comprises an alginate solution, e.g., a 0.2 to 5.0 per cent solution of sodium, ammonium or triethanolamine alginate, and a moisture-absorbent material, e.g., peat, moss, cellulosic fibre, soil, clays such as bentonite, kieselguhr, attasol or other Fuller's earth. The absorbent may contain plant food, trace elements and growth-promoting hormones. The preparations may be made in the form of a sheet, block, slab or strip as a carrier for seeds, or in the form of a flower pot or seed pan, which may comprise an inner container composed of cellulosic material containing the hormone and/or plant foods and an outer container composed of the absorbent impregnated with the alginate solution; the outer surface of the container may be coated with a soluble calcium salt such as the chloride or citrate or the alginate solution used may contain the calcium salt and the container dipped in water containing a low alcohol or ketone. A plasticizer, e.g., glycerine or a dihydric alcohol, may also be incorporated in the alginate solution. The alginate solution containing the absorbent material may be applied to seeds and then dried. Specification 611,927, [Group IX], is referred to in the Provisional Specifications.

    • 588,548. Pile fabrics. FUHRHOP, W. F., and ISSUM, H. VAN. March 1, 1945, Nos. 5111, 20412, 21704 and 28467. [Class 142 (iv)] A method of manufacturing a pile fabric of determined density having a texture simulating woven pile fabric, comprises arranging yarn on rods or other supporting members in determined spaced relation to suit the weftwise density, assembling the yarn on the supporting members to suit the warpwise density, consolidating the suspended yarn by means of a consolidating medium, e.g., a water-soluble solution or gel forming transverse sections of the consolidated yarn, removing sufficient of the consolidating medium of each section to expose yarn ends, fixing the exposed yarn ends in a backing, e.g., of plastic, and removing the remainder of the consolidating medium. The backing may, however, be applied to the ends of the yarn before each section is cast off. In one form, Fig. 2, the yarn 12 assembled on bars 8 is placed in a mould 10 and consolidated by a solidifying medium 11 to form a block which is removed from the mould and cut transversely into sections to each of which a backing is secured. The yarn may be assembled with the aid of jacquard or other shedding mechanism or by winding yarn on a number of frames. In a modification, the assembled yarn is placed in a sectional mould and the consolidating medium inserted in the mould to form successive layers. In another modification, the yarn is impregnated with consolidating medium while it is being assembled. In a further modification, the finished fabric sections are combined to form a length of fabric, or a carpet or rug. In a still further modification, two sections of consolidated yarn are superposed with backing material between them.
