    • In a process for machining workpieces (10) using a laser beam (11), in particular for cutting, perforating and removing material from metallic workpieces (10), the machining site (12) of the workpiece (10) is monitored by means of a beam detector (13) by means of which the intensity of the laser beam is reduced when an upper limit value (14) is reached and increased when a lower limit value (15) is reached. In order to obtain a simply controlled process without exceeding a critical temperature, e.g. the evaporation temperature, the beam detector (13) measures the radiant heat (16) emanating from the machining site (12). This radiant heat is controlled in function of a predetermined range of temperature, the upper temperature of which is the upper limit value (14) and the lower temperature of which is the lower limit value (15). The laser beam is switched off when the upper limit value (14) is reached and switched on again when the lower limit value (15) is reached.
