A user provides a user identifier and a user profile not associated with an avatar is retrieved based on the user identifier. Avatar characteristics are determined based on the retrieved user profile. The virtual environment is rendered with an avatar based on the determined avatar characteristics. The retrieved user profile may include at least one of a default profile, an advertiser supplied profile, a profile associated with a given user and a profile associated with the virtual environment.
