摘要： 19,190. Fox, R., Fawcett, W., and Fawcett, W. Aug. 26. Gas and like e n g i n e s, igniting in. The insulator B of a sparking-plug carries the central conductor A, preferably of nickel, of which the lower end a is of spade formation and the upper end is screwed and secured in place by nuts b, b and a washer b , the washer being preferably cemented to the insulator. The lower end of the body C is recessed and has a flange c , between which and the end a of the conductor sparking takes place. The flange may be perforated at c . The chamber which surrounds the end a prevents the formation of a soot bridge between the conductors. The insulator B is secured in the casing C by a gland D at the top and a packing-ring b at the bottom.

Copying and carving machines. - A cutter or abrading-tool holder for sculpturing and like machines is provided with electric means for continuously and automatically compensating for wear. The cutter C, Fig. 1, is carried by a spindle D connected by a continuation piece I of non- magnetic material to a soft-iron part J, which acts as the core of a solenoid K. A central tube M supplies water or the like and passes through a stuffing-box at H. As the cutter wears away, the tube M , which is kept on the work by its weight or a spring, is raised and electric contact is made at A', the cutter and spindle being thus fed down. A shunt connexion at B' provides in addition for maintaining at all times a constant pressure on the work.

Carving-machines; dressing stone, marble, slate, &c.-A machine for shaping, surfacing, polishing, copying, and sculpturing stone, marble, slate, &c. has two or more sets of governing-cylinders worked automatically by fluid pressure and arranged at rightangles to each other, and, in the case of copying- machines, means for automatically withdrawing the tracer over any shoulder or abrupt projection in the copy. A cylinder which carries a turn-table F for the tracer and tables F for the cutting-tools or work, moves on a piston B, the supply-pipe C having a reversing-cock D operated by adjustable stops e. This cylinder, which is connected by brackets to a sleeve sliding on the bar G and is rotated to any angle required by a pinion a and rack h' attached to the piston of a cylinder H, is mounted on cylinders A, sliding on vertical pistons B', which are fulcrumed at b upon cylinders A . Cylinders A may be connected by couplings J to the cylinders A to allow horizontal travel instead of angular movement round the fulcrum. The cylinders are all operated in a similar manner to the main cylinder, the fluidsupply pipes being connected to a controlling- apparatus. When the tracer encounters a shoulder, the excess pressure produced in the cylinders opens a valve and enters the cylinder L, Fig. 3, which surrounds the tracer beneath the piston k, thereby moving the cylinder down on the copy against the action of a spring l, and raising the tracer. In a modification, the movement of the cylinders may raise the tracer, the excess pressure acting through valves on the particular cylinders giving the movement required.

Wheels and tools, composition of.-A binding- agent to form a hard stone for use in making abrading tools or blocks for stone working and like purposes comprises a mixture of magnesia or magnesite with a solution of magnesium chloride. A mixture of magnesia and magnesite may be used and the chloride of any alkaline or other metal may be substituted for the magnesium chloride. The abrading-material, such as carborundum, corundum, emery, &c., is mixed with the binding-agent into a plastic mass and moulded round metal, wooden, &c. cores or backs, or into the form of wheels, and hardens without the application of heat. One core or back can carry more than one quality of abrading-material.
