    • Pyridinylurea compounds of formula (I) and acid addition salts thereof; wherein n is 0 or 1; R is cycloalkyl, alkenyl, or an alkyl group optionally substitued with halogen, hydroxy, cyclo-alkyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino or phenyl; R1 is hydrogen or alkyl; and R and R1 together with the nitrogen atom of the NRR1 group optionally define a heterocycle of 4 to 6 ring carbon atoms; provided that when n is 0, A is 0, 1 or 2 and X is selected from a substituent X1 at the 2-position and a substituent Y at the 6-position, wherein X1 is hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylsufonyl, Y is hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylsulfonyl; at least one of X1 and Y is other than hydrogen; the NHCONRR1 group is bonded to the pyridinyl ring in the 3- or 4-position; and when both R and R1 are alkyl, R is 1,1-dimethylethyl or cycloalkyl and R1 is methyl; provided further that when n is 1, A is 1 to 4, each X independently is halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, 2-pyridinyl, alkylthio or alkylsulfonyl; and the NHCONRR1 group is bonded to the pyridinyl ring in the 3- or 4-position. The compounds are useful in agriculture for plant growth regulation such as the retardation of senescence in soybean plants.
