    • An optical communication system (1) comprises a transmitter (2), a multi-core fibre bundle cable assembly (3), and a receiver (4). The transmitter (2) consists of a laser driver integrated circuit (5) which is used to modulate a light source (6), the light 7 from which is coupled through a lens (8) which provides a substantially collimated output beam (9) which is parallel or nearly so and has a beam diameter in the region of 100 μm to 150 μm. The fibre cable assembly (3) comprises a multi-core fibre bundle. The individual fibre cores (24, 25 and 26) have core diameters in the region of 100 μm. This arrangement provides that the coupling efficiency of light from the transmitter 2 into the fibre bundle assembly 3 is insensitive to a significant level of lateral and axial misalignment between the fibre bundle cable assembly 3 and the transmitter 2. For this embodiment an acceptable coupling efficiency can be maintained for a lateral misalignment of at least ± 100 μm and axial misalignment of greater than 1000 μm. The receiver (4) comprises a spherical lens (27) configured to collect light (22) emitted from the entire facet of the multi-core fibre bundle cable assembly (3) and focus the light onto a light detector (28). Light may be coupled in varying proportions into all of the cores of the fibre bundle (3).     • A connector (20) has one part (22) which provides an electrical connection and another part (21) providing an optical connection. A single set of pins (24) connects the connector to its circuit. The connector (20) includes a circuit (26-29) allowing a channel of communication on a motherboard to be connected either electrically or optically. Additionally, a signal may be provided back to the motherboard to indicate which means of connection is employed. A mechanism (21) receives and holds in place optical fibres, and a socket (22) receives an electrical plug. A printed circuit board (26) is fitted with pins (24) to allow connections to be made to a motherboard. The electrical contacts (23) connect the appropriate points on the printed circuit board to the electrical plug, when it is inserted. Opto-electrical components (29) have their leads connected to the printed circuit board (26), so that when optical communication is required the signals can pass through these components. Short pins (28) are mounted on the printed circuit board (26) approximately in-line with some of the contacts (23) and in such a position that the ends of the contacts (23) touch the corresponding pins (28) when there is no electrical plug in the cavity. Other electronic components (27) as required are also mounted on the printed circuit board (26).

    • A connector (50) receives and grips an optical fibre (F) in registry with an optical element (53). Pivoting portions (22, 32) are held in default inoperative position by the spring action of moulded hinges (21, 31), at which position two shutter portions (24, 34) meet, so forming a shutter preventing the ingress of dirt to the optical element. This is the default position when the connector is not being used. As the optical fibre (F) is pushed a small distance into the connector, the pivoting portions (22, 32) are caused to pivot a small amount about the hinges (21, 22), bringing teeth (23, 33) into contact with the outside jacket of the fibre (F).The bodies (20, 30) of the inserts are forced radially away from the central axis of the connector, so providing a leaf spring force which keeps the teeth (23, 33) engaged with the jacket of the fibre (F). The shutter portions (24, 34) move out of the way of the fibre (F) and the spring action applies a force to draw the fibre (F) further into the body of the connector (50).When the fibre (F) has been pushed home the bodies of the inserts (20, 30) have been able to relax partially in the radial direction towards their normal position, but continue to exert a spring force on the teeth (23, 33). This force acts both to keep the teeth engaged in the jacket of the fibre, and to push the fibre F firmly against the optical element (53), so that the fibre F is held in the connector (50) in the engaged position.

    • An optical connector (1) comprises four main components, namely a clamp 2; a housing 3 into which the clamp (2) slides; two optical elements (4), a transmitter and a receiver; and an EMI metal shield (5) surrounding the elements (4). The clamp (2) has two parallel through holes (10, 11) for receiving fibre terminations, each through- hole having a generally conical mouth (17, 18) for convenient guidance of a fibre termination. Inside of the through-holes (10, 11) there are side resilient clamp members (12), and there is a single central clamp member (13). The clamp (2) is of moulded plastics construction, and the clamp members (12) are resilient in the lateral plane. The central clamp member (13) on the other hand has little flexibility and remains essentially static throughout the clamping operation. Each resilient clamping member (12) has a tooth (15) at its end for snap-fitting engagement with the housing (3) at open and closed positions. Fibre terminations (F) are inserted through the clamp mouths (17, 18) and the through-holes (10, 11) and into the sockets (30) of the housing (3). The clamp (2) is then simply pushed inwardly so that teeth (35) in the socket walls bite into the fibre claddings.
