    • A wire cut electric spark machine, in which a wire electrode (14) is sent from its supply unit (12) to a region for discharge machining of a workpiece (W), tensed between upper and lower heads (22, 26) and transferred to machine the workpiece (W) by discharge on a work table (24). When the breakage of the wire electrode is detected by a suitable detector during the discharge machining of the workpiece (W), the wire electrode is taken back and held in a position near the upper head (22) by a wire electrode feed means (40), and the broken end of the wire electrode (14) is detected by a wire end detector (66) outside the discharge machining region. The detected broken end of the wire electrode is repaired by using a cutter (60) and a blade receiving base (64) in a wire electrode repairing position which is provided apart from the discharge machining region, to remove the broken end. The repaired wire electrode (14) is set again between the upper and lower heads (22, 26) by using a jet nozzle (74) to resume the discharge machining of the workpiece.

    • An electric discharge machining apparatus of the wire-cutting type is equipped with a wire cutting unit between an upper wire guide member and a work table, the wire cutting unit being allowed to move in a horizontal direction to traverse a wire electrode (W) which downwardly extends with respect to the upper wire guide member from a wire passage of the upper wire guide member. The wire cutting unit comprises a base block (55), and a movable block (56) which can approach or separate away from the base block to define a slit (60) that can be opened or closed relative thereto and to define a nozzle hole (61). The slit extends in a horizontal direction in which the wire cutting unit moves to accept the wire electrode. The nozzle hole can be connected to the lower end of wire passage of the upper wire guide member, and is so formed as to inject a liquid toward the wire passage of the lower wire guide member, the liquid being supplied into the wire passage of the upper wire guide member. The wire cutting unit has a wire detector (66) for detecting an end of the wire electrode between the base block and movable block, and has wire cutting means (62) for cutting the wire electrode between the base block and the movable block.

    • An electric discharge machining apparatus of the wire-cutting type is equipped with a wire cutting unit between an upper wire guide member and a work table, the wire cutting unit being allowed to move in a horizontal direction to traverse a wire electrode (W) which downwardly extends with respect to the upper wire guide member from a wire passage of the upper wire guide member.     • A wire piece recovery apparatus in a wire cut electric discharge machine, wherein waste wire pieces formed when a wire is cut off prior to an automatic wire connection are recovered without fail so as not to disturb the wire connection and the electric discharge machining. After the wire is cut off with a cutter (110) provided on an arm assembly of a wire connecting unit (80), the arm assembly is returned to a retracted position in a state where waste wire pieces formed by the cut-off are held between a spring member provided on a movable nozzle extension and a stationary nozzle extension. A suction nozzle (101) fixed to the main body (81) of the wire connecting unit is supplied with pressurized air to produce negative pressure in the suction nozzle and the vicinity of the bottom thereof. When the wire pieces are released, the wire pieces sucked into the nozzle are received in a receiver (102) installed on the main body of the wire connecting unit.
