    • The present invention is directed to an apparatus useful in downhole logging tools used in the oil and gas industry. The present invention is particularly directed to an acoustic logging tool including improved, articulated transducer pad assemblies for providing improved transducer contact with the wall of a borehole or the inside wall of casing cemented in the borehole. The apparatus of the present invention provides a plurality of articulated transducer pad assemblies disposed about the circumference of an acoustic logging tool in a plurality of separately movable and adjustable groups. These assemblies each include a plurality of articulated joints permitting limited independent movement of each assembly. The assemblies are spring biased at each end into a deployed configuration to maintain good contact with the wall of the borehole or casing. A drive motor overcomes the biasing springs to retract the assemblies to provide a compact tool for tripping to the location of interest within the borehole.

    • The present invention is directed to a device which simply and efficiently compensates for changes in the volume of a fluid trapped in a fluid-filled cavity between two relatively immovable housings and an elastomeric seal ring. The present invention is particularly useful in an acoustic transducer pad assembly designed for installation on logging tools used in deep boreholes in the oil and gas industry where high temperatures and pressures are experienced at downhole locations. In a presently preferred embodiment, the device comprises a transducer unit housing fixedly secured to a metal wear pad housing with an elastomeric seal disposed therebetween to define a fluid-filled cavity between adjacent portions of the housings and the seal. The seal is disposed in a groove of sufficient size to permit the required lateral expansion and contraction by deformation or extrusion of the seal in order to compensate for the expected changes in the volume of the fluid-filled cavity.

    • A downhole in-line tubular accumulator for the attenuation of pressure pulses generated by operation of a downhole vibratory apparatus in an oil or gas well. An inner tube is positioned within a hollow housing, with the inner tube being attached to the housing at their upper ends. The lower end of the inner tube is unattached within the housing, thereby establishing an annular upper cavity between the inner tube and the housing, and an open lower cavity in the housing below the unattached lower end of the inner tube. The attenuator is run into the well on a work string. Pressure pulses traveling through the fluid column in the work string are attenuated by entrapped air in the annular upper cavity in the housing.

    • Well bore apparatus is installed in a well casing on a tubular string having a packer anchored in and forming a seal within the casing. In the tubing string above the packer is a safety valve structure held open by the pressure of fluid supplied through control fluid tubing extending to the top of the well between the exterior of the tubing string and the casing. A long tubing seal structure has a lock releasable by the pressure of fluid supplied through the tubing string. The tubing seal structure is released to enable the tubing string to move freely in either direction, in response to pressure and/or temperature changes, whereby tension and compression reversals are eliminated. The tubing string above the sealing receptacle can be pulled from above the packer and other downhole structures. The hydraulic release is operable by fluid pressure to release the receptacle for longitudinal movement relative to a long sealing slick joint.
