    • A washing machine comprises a tub, in which a pulsator is rotatably arranged. The pulsator is driven by a motor positively or reversely. When a start switch is pressed, first an initial cycle is started for a relatively short period of time to dissolve detergents. When this initial cycle is completed, a main cycle is started, during which the pulsator repeats positive and reverse rotations with intervals. The main cycle is arranged to continue for a set period of time, into which auxiliary cycles shorter than the main cycle are intermittently inserted. The positively and reversely rotating times of the adjoining repeating units included in the main cycle differ with each other. In the auxiliary cycle, its repeating unit involves a relatively longer rotating time or a shorter recess time of the pulsator as compared with the repeating unit constituting the main cycle. Accordingly, during the auxiliary cycle, a water current stronger than that in the main cycle is produced, thus restraining the "entangling clothes" during a washing process.

    • The control apparatus of the present invention is used for a washing machine in which a photosensor having a light emitting element and a light receiving element opposite thereto, detects the degree of light transmission in washing water, and in which, based on variations of the degree of light transmission in washing water thus detected, the respective steps of washing, rinsing and draining are controlled. Correction is made such that the photosensor presents a predetermined sensitivity to set a current which flows in the light emitting element, after which a washing operation is started. After drainage, when the next water supply operation is started and the level of water thus supplied reaches a predetermined level within a predetermined period of time, it is judged that washing water used at the previous washing remains in a washing tank. Then, control is made such that no adjustment is made of the sensitivity of the photosensor and a standard current flows in the light emitting element. Thereafter, a washing operation is started. Thus, the control apparatus of the present invention is adapted such that no influence is exerted upon the degree of washing by variations of the characteristics of light emitting elements and light receiving elements.

    • The dishwasher according to the present invention has two operation courses: one course adapted for using a low-foaming dedicated detergent; and the other course adapted for using a high-foaming kitchen detergent. In the kitchen detergent course, the dishwashing operation includes a first mode of the “spray and wait” process carried out as a preliminary washing operation, including the steps of spraying the water containing a detergent onto the dishes for a short period of time and subsequently halting the spray for a certain period of time. During this process, the amount of the foam present within the wash chamber is determined by means of a photosensor located within the drying duct. If there is a large amount of foam, a longer period of time is set for draining the detergent water. After the water is drained for the aforementioned period of time, fresh water is supplied to a predetermined level. With the concentration of the detergent water thus regulated, a second mode of the “spray and wait” process is carried out as the main washing operation. For a larger amount of the foam produced in the first “spray and wait” process, the detergent water is diluted to have a smaller concentration, so that the second “spray and wait” process is prevented from producing an abnormally large amount of foam. Thus, the dishwasher is capable of washing the dishes with an inexpensive, easy-to-purchase kitchen detergent while preventing the foam from escaping to the outside.
