    • Aspects of the present disclosure are presented for a single surgical instrument configured to grasp, seal, and/or cut tissue through application of therapeutic energy, and also detect nerves through application of non-therapeutic electrical energy. A medical device may include two jaws at an end effector, used to apply therapeutic energy and to perform surgical procedures. The therapeutic energy may be in the form of ultrasonic vibrations or higher voltage electrosurgical energy. One of the jaws may be configured to cut tissue through application of the blade. In addition, one or both of the two jaws may be configured to apply nontherapeutic energy for nerve stimulation probing. The application of therapeutic energy may be disabled while the nontherapeutic nerve stimulation energy is applied, and vice versa. The nontherapeutic nerve stimulation energy may be applied to the use of one or more probes positioned near one or both of the jaws.

    • A surgical instrument includes a transducer assembly (2500) with a housing (2502) having a conduit section (2510) and a base portion (2520). A fluid passageway (2515) is defined through the conduit and base portion (2520), an ultrasonic transducer (2504) including a plurality of piezoelectric elements (2508A-D) and a plurality of electrodes (2509A-D) are arranged in a stack (2504) configuration, where an electrode is located between each pair of piezoelectric elements. A first borehole (2527) is defined through the ultrasonic transducer (2504) and an end mass (2506) having a second borehole (2527) defined therethrough. A surface (2330) of the end mass (2506) is positioned adjacent a first end of the ultrasonic transducer (2504), the end mass (2506) is configured to engage with the housing (2502), and the conduit section (2510) of the housing (2502) is configured to pass through the second borehole (2527) of the end mass (2506). The end mass (2506) is configured to compress the ultrasonic transducer (2504) against a surface (2330) of the housing (2502) when the end mass (2506) is engaged with the housing (2502).
