摘要： A handheld mailing system that is easily portable while still maintaining the functionality and security necessary for a complete mailing system is disclosed. A handheld device, such as, for example, a Personal Data Assistant (PDA), is provided with a rating engine and metering device functionality. The weight of an item to be mailed can be input manually, or provided via a communication link from a scale. The rating engine in the PDA will determine the necessary amount of postage, and the metering functionality will provide the authorization and funds for the necessary postage. A printer coupled to the PDA provides a printed label. A security device, such as, for example, a dongle, is provided to ensure security for the mail processing functionality.

摘要： A postal scale system is updated, by telephone or other communication medium, by a remote service provider whenever postal rates or regulations are changed, without requiring shipment or replacement of IC chips. The system provides for remote updating of both application software and databases such as rates, zip codes and the like. By having direct communication between the provider and the postal scale, the invention permits relevant data, including scale model number, software version number and the like to be accessed by the provider, thus to update the service provider's database and to provide updates only to the correct systems. The inventive system further uses automated telephone billing, available as 1-900 service, thus to reduce expenses and errors associated with billing for update services.

摘要： A mailing machine is provided that determines if entry into a disabled state is coupled with the need for auxiliary information to be entered by the user. If auxiliary information is required to be entered by the user, the print head will not move to the capped position but instead remains in the printing position, and a timer is activated to provide the user with time to enter the information. If the user enters the required information before a predetermined amount of time has expired, the mail piece will be processed without any delay required for the print head to move from the capped position to the printing position. Only if the user has not entered the required information within the predetermined amount of time will the print head move to the capped position.

摘要： A mailing machine is provided that, when operating in a differential weighing mode, can detect if a user has replaced one or more mail pieces that may have been inadvertently removed at the same time back onto the scale. If the mailing machine detects such replacement within a predetermined time period after the scale has stabilized, the weight calculated for the mail piece can be reduced by the amount added back to the scale, or, alternatively, the user could be requested to confirm that multiple pieces were inadvertently removed from the scale at the same time, the user is trying to correct that error, and a new weight is to be determined.

摘要： A method of recalibrating an electronic scale is disclosed which causes the scale to indicate accurate weight measurements regardless of variations in the physical and/or environmental conditions under which the scale is operating between a site of origin and a site of installation which tend to adversely effect accurate weight. The method utilizes the removable platter of the scale as a fixed weight of indeterminate amount which is used to calibrate the scale at a site of origin under controlled physical and/or environmental conditions and to recalibrate the scale at a site of installation at which the physical and/or environmental conditions may be different from those that prevailed at the site of origin. Also disclosed is a method of obtaining an accurate indication of the weight of a mail piece placed on the platter of the scale at the site of installation regardless of the variations in physical and/or environmental conditions under which the scale operates, this method being an extension of the method for recalibrating the scale.
