    • A remotely actuatable diagnostic valve biased normally open is disposed in the air inlet of a vehicle fuel tank vapor storage canister and a thermistor disposed to sense vapor temperature above the liquid level in the fuel tank. Upon engine shutdown, the valve is remotely actuated to close. When the fuel vapor in the tank cools to form a vacuum in the tank, the vacuum overcomes the valve bias and holds the valve shut when the valve is remotely de-actuated. A valve position sensor provides confirmation that the valve has been held shut by the vapor vacuum when the valve is de-actuated. If a leak exists the vacuum will be insufficient to hold the valve closed after remote de-actuation; and, the valve is biased open, whereupon the valve position sensor provides a fault indication signal.

    • A capless fuel filler neck (10) has an annular resilient seal (20) which seals over a fuel nozzle (22) upon insertion in the filler tube. Further insertion of the nozzle opens a flapper (32) biased against a rim flange (30) on the lower end of annular seal. Movement of the flapper by the nozzle also moves an auxiliary seal (88') on the flapper and which opens separate venting passages (70') disposed externally of the nozzle tube. Upon removal of the nozzle from the filler tube, the flapper closes against the rim flange to seal the filler tube; and, the auxiliary seals close and seal the vent tubes. The vent tubes serve to prevent spray-back of fuel when the nozzle opens the flapper in a tank with pressurized vapor and fuel trapped in the filler tube and to provide an air inlet path to accommodate the aspiration of the refueling nozzle.

    • A pair of solid state pressure sensors are disposed near the bottom of a fuel tank vertically spaced with one a unit distance above the other. A third solid state sensor is disposed in the tank at the highest point under the upper wall. The apparent hydrostatic pressure is computed from the difference in pressure sensed by the highest and lowest sensors. The density is computed from the difference in pressure sensed by the pair of sensors near the tank bottom; and, the difference normalized for the vertical distance therebetween. The liquid level height is then computed from computed density and apparent pressure. The reserve volume of liquid fuel is then found for the computed height from a lookup table of values of liquid height and corresponding liquid volume.
