    • A system and method of providing an integrated wireless telecommunications network including a cellular network portion (104) and a packet-switched network portion (108). The cellular network portion provides legacy mobile telecommunications functionality to mobile subscribers. The packet-switched network portion is provided for transporting communication traffic, wherein the communication traffic comprises traffic originated from a mobile subscriber, traffic intented for a mobile subscriber, or both. The network also includes a gateway (116) disposed between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion for providing a communication path therebetween. An interworking interface module (118) is provided between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion. The interworking interface module preferably comprises a mobilty gateway (120) and an IP client (or proxy) (122), wherein the mobility gateway handles mobility management information and the translation of control signaling information between the cellular network portion and the packet-switched network portion. The IP client handles communication traffic with one or more associated servers disposed in the PSN with respect to, e.g., mobility management, security/authentication, and subscriber services of the mobile subscriber.

    • A system and method for processing events in a telecommunication network. Events (34, 35) generated in the network (4) are correlated, and the correlated events are sent to a corresponding client entity in a client database. Each client entity (182) stores a parsing stack (90) containing a correlated set of events and stores a semantic action object (92) that defines client-specific functions that relate to the events. A server (84) reconstructs event sequences from the correlated events in each client based on sequencing rules that are common to all of the clients and updates the parsing stacks in response to the event sequences.     • A system and method in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network for interfacing a Base Station System (BSS(11)) and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN(12)). A protocol stack in the BSS and the SGSN includes a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) layer over an Internet Protocol (IP) layer. Data packets are transmitted between functional entities in the SGSN and the BSS over a connectionless IP network. The protocol stack includes a Base Station System GPRS Protocol (BSSGP) protocol layer that provides radio-related, Quality-of-Service (QoS), and routing information that is required to transmit user data between the BSS and the SGSN. The stack also includes a modified Network Services (NS') layer which is divided into an upper NS'-Network Service Control (NS'-NSC) sub-layer and a lower NS'-Sub-Network Service (NS'-SNS) sub-layer. The NS'-NSC sub-layer maps to the BSSGP layer and manages functional entities therein. The NS'-SNS sub-layer maps to the UDP and IP layers and provides access to the IP network. A single UDP port is reserved to make the NS layer and the BSSGP layer act as an application over the IP stack.

    • A system and method in a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network for automatically configuring Network Service Entity Identifiers (NSEIs) in a Base Station System (BSS(32)) and a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN(33)) when the BSS is reconfigured. The Gb interface between the BSS and the SGSN is modified to operate using the Internet Protocol (IP), and the BSS and the SGSN are configured to run on IP. Whenever a new Network Service Entity (NSE) is added (57) to an existing BSS, or a new BSS is added to the network, the BSS automatically sends (52) a modified Network Service (NS')-Reset message to the SGSN requesting an NSEI. The SGSN dynamically allocates (53) a free NSEI from a pool of NSEIs and sends (54) it to the BSS. When an NSE is removed (61) from the BSS, the BSS automatically sends (62) a modified NS'-Reset message to the SGSN to free an NSEI. The SGSN de-allocates (63) the NSEI, and returns the NSEI to the pool of free NSEIs. All related entries for Base Station Systems GPRS Protocol (BSSGP) Virtual Circuit Identifiers (BVCIs) under the de-allocated NSEI are also removed by the SGSN.

An interface provided between the gateway and radio network controller includes a first protocol translator (304) for converting Transaction Capability Application Part (TCAP) messaging into IP messaging and a second protocol translator (306) for converting Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) User Part (ISUP) messaging into Primary Rate Interface (PRI) messaging. In some exemplary embodiments, either or both of the translators may be integrated within the IP gateway. In a further embodiment, a flash proxy agent (203) is disposed between the gateway and a Multipoint Control Unit (1302) for facilitating multi-party conferences involving ANSI-53 or proprietary flash messaging.
