摘要： Data throughput rate in a power line communications ("PLC") system is controlled by generating PLC carrier signals in accordance with a PLC signal frame structure containing payload symbols where the payload symbol length is selected based on at least one of a PLC system channel quality and node configuration data. The selected payload symbol length determines the processing operations that a source PLC transceiver performs for generating PLC signals or that a destination PLC transceiver performs for extracting information content from received PLC signals. The payload symbol lengths can be selected to maximize the data throughput rate while maintaining compatibility with prior art PLC system protocols and standards that require a PLC signal frame structure and its payload portion to have fixed, predetermined lengths.

摘要： This invention defines a highly programmable MAC architecture for handling protocols that require precision timing and demand very short response times. The Media Access Controller (130) consists of micro-coded programmable co-processors and general purpose CPUs (100). CPUs perform processing intensive functions while coprocessors perform PHY specific media access control functions. The uniqueness of the architecture is in the real-time programmability of the co-processors; they can be reprogrammed by the CPUs based on the calculations performed in the CPU domain. Any embodiment of this invention is suitable for ASIC, FPGA, discrete or combinations of these implementation schemes. The invention applies to any communications technology.

摘要： Power line communication (“PLC”) signals are transmitted between a head-end PLC transceiver coupled to multiple remote PLC transceivers over a electric power and communications distribution network in accordance with a timing controlled PLC data frame which determines how much bandwidth is allocated to downstream transmission from the head-end to the remotes and to upstream transmissions from one or more of the remotes to the head-end. The configuration of the timing controlled data frame can be dynamically modified to achieve higher bandwidth for the downstream traffic and to satisfy changing bandwidth needs of each remote.
