    • A method for purifying methanesulphonyl chloride (MSC) and particularly for substantially reducing the amount of sulphuric acid that would otherwise be contained in methanesulphonic acid produced at a later stage by hydrolysing MSC. According to the method, MSC is treated with at least one powdered or shaped solid selected from (1) activated charcoals; (2) substances known to be convertible into water-insoluble SO4 counter-cations; (3) inorganic solids known to be capable of trapping SO4 anions in aqueous media by means of an exchange with other anions in the structures of said solids; (4) anion exchange resins known to be capable of trapping SO4 anions in aqueous media by means of an exchange with other anions in the structures of said resins; and (5) solids known to be capable of interacting with SO4 anions in aqueous media, the purified MSC then being separated from the solid phase with which the sulphates to be removed have combined.
