The support has a surface having binding sites (62,64,66,68) adapted to receive micro-components (80,84) of a type that are applied to the surface using a fluid (72,73); and energy absorbing heat producers at selected binding site. Each energy absorbing heat producer is adapted to receive energy and to transduce a portion of the received energy to heat the fluid (72) proximate to the selected binding sites; so that when the micro-components are applied using a fluid that increases viscosity when heated, the heat generated by the energy absorbing heat producers increases the viscosity of the fluid proximate to the selected binding sites to prevent the micro-components from attaching to the selected binding sites

摘要： Methods are disclosed for calibrating a reflectometer using black and white references observed in locations optically different from the sample location. Reflectance values of dark and light standards are measured in the sample location and such standards are read on a referee reflectometer having an "ideal" black and white references. The reflectances of the dark and light standards, as read on the referee reflectometer, are selected or adjusted to represent what the black and white references would have generated if they were read on the referee reflectometer, to produce calibrating factors in making reflectance readings in the subject reflectometer.

摘要： A diode laser 40 which generates both stimulated and spontaneous emission in accordance with the amount of excitation, is coupled to an optical fibre 50 having a core size and index of refraction such that only the lowest-order mode at the laser wavelength transmits the laser emission. The coupling may include optical elements 52. The optical fibre provides preferential transmission of the stimulated emission of the diode laser 40 compared to the transmission of the diode laser's spontaneous emission, and permits the enhanced extinction of the light power when the injection current supplied to the diode laser is reduced below its lasing threshold without unduly limiting the beam power transmitted thereby. Transmitting the diode laser's emission through the single-mode optical fiber creates a consistent, circularly symmetric irradiance distribution independent of the excitation supplied to the laser which simplifies the design of the subsequent optical train, eliminates the need for beam-shaping optics adusted specifically for each laser, and facilitates the exchange of faulty diode lasers.

摘要： A multiple-source array for use in thermal printing uses source interleaving to avoid overlapping of the dye-transfer tracks upon the donor material in a single pass. This prevents the formation of artifacts in the image because of thermal interaction among either the sources or printing spots. This also permits the thermal array to be oriented predominantly perpendicular to the first-scan direction so that any arcuate shape of the array causes minimal spacing variations of the scan lines and minimizes spacing variations in focus or document source separation for resistive-head thermal printing. Interleaving also allows multiple printheads to be used even when they have different printing characteristics. The array includes independently addressable printing element data channels 64 and a data distributor 62 allowing interleaving to be accomplished in the printhead. The printhead also includes pixel replication circuitry that allows pixel replication in both the fast and slow scan directions.
