    • The present invention provides fiber optic couplers (20) for use with at least three optic fibers (10). The optic fibers (10) arranged in linear-array, that is, the optical fibers (10) are coupled side by side. The fibers (10) along either end of the linear-array are coupled only to a single fiber (10A), while the remaining fibers are generally coupled between only two adjacent fibers (10). Generally, at least one of the fibers (10) has a propagation constant different than the other fibers (10). Such variations in the propagation constant are used to vary the coupling coefficients among the fibers (10) of the linear-array, thereby providing a repeatable mechanism, to vary coupled power ratios among the fibers (10) of coupler (20). Theoretical calculations and empirical experience have shown that varying the propagation constant of fibers (10) among a linear-array, generally by pre-pulling the fibers (10) by varying amounts, allows repeatable manufacturing of 1x3, 3x3, 1x4, 4x4, 1xN and even NxN fiber couplers having even coupled power ratios.

    • A fiberoptic coupler capable of many functions is presented. The basic fiberoptic coupler has a first sleeve (33), a second sleeve (36), a first collimating GRIN (34) or conventional lens, and a second collimating lens (35) or conventional lens. The first sleeve (33) holds end sections of two or more input optical fibers (30, 31) along the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. With only one output fiber the coupler operates as a combiner. If more than one output fiber is held by the second sleeve, the input and output fibers can be arranged so that a light signal from one input fiber is sent to one output fiber.     • An optical device which controls the strength of an optical signal from an input fiber (27) to an output fiber (28) responsive to a signal on a control terminal.     • A compact optical circulator which can be expanded into a large number of optical ports is provided.
