    • The present invention provides for a communication server of a service provider to authorize resource reservation for a communication over a packet-switched network without requiring the communication server to know the identity of or significant details about the network elements providing the communication. The communication server is configured to provide secure authorization indicia to the terminal receiving or delivering information for the communication. The terminal presents the authorization indicia to one or more network elements involved in reserving resources for the communication. The network element or elements will use the authorization indicia to authorize resource reservation for the communication, and may forward the authentication to additional network elements involved in reserving resources for the communication.

    • The present invention provides an architecture for a media gateway to identify and register with multiple media gateway controllers for various types of voice and data services, along with having the media gateway appear to each of these media gateway controllers as a single, dedicated control entity. A logical layer, referred to as a virtualizer, is associated with each media gateway and appears to the media gateway as a single media gateway controller. To each media gateway controller the virtualizer supports, the virtualizer appears as a single media gateway. In essence, the virtualizer is a protocol manager and message router. The virtualizer supports the registration of multiple media gateways and then creates virtual gateways based on requirements of the media gateway controllers serving these virtual gateways. Preferably, subscribers associated with endpoints handled by the media gateway are grouped into a virtual gateway being served by a select media gateway controller or group thereof.

    • A mobile terminal is anchored in a control subsystem, which will function as the mobile terminal's home service subsystem. Call signaling for an incoming call is routed to the control subsystem, which will provide call processing. The call processing may include determining how to route the call to the mobile terminal. Call signaling may be provided to the mobile terminal via the packet subsystem while the bearer path for the incoming call may be established to the mobile terminal though either the circuit-switched subsystem or the packet subsystem. When the mobile terminal is capable of supporting local wireless communications, the bearer paths for incoming calls may be provided via a local wireless subsystem. The subsystem chosen for the bearer path may be based on whether there is sufficient bandwidth to support the bearer path over an available packet-based connection.

    • A private network firewall 225 is treated as if it were a media gateway network entity. Doing so allows a media gateway controller 205 to exchange messages with the firewall 225 for purposes of securely setting up and tearing down pinholes in the firewall. With this ability comes the ability to provide secure VoIP calls between public 250 and private 220 networks. A call server or media gateway controller 205, that is approving the VoIP communication stream in a private packet data network requests, via a secure tunnel 230, that the firewall 225 open a pinhole filter for a specific source and destination address pair corresponding to media gateway endpoints, 210 and 260 respectively, using either MGCP (H.248) or COPS messages, for instance. The pinhole filter is then disabled when the session is complete.
