    • A high-voltage type photoflash lamp filled with a filamentary combustible material and oxygen and having a beadless ignition structure comprising a pair of spaced apart lead-in wires with spherically shaped terminations, a glass frit coating over the lead-in wires with scraped-off portions exposing the bare metal of the wire adjacent each termination, and a coating of primer material over the frit-coated terminations and bared portions of the wires. The primer may bridge the wire terminations or comprise separate spaced apart coatings on the respective terminations, with the filamentary combustible being in contact with both terminations to provide a conducting path therebetween. The frit coating is thick enough to prevent preignition short circuits. Also disclosed is a method of making the lamp including the steps of applying a flame to melt down the ends of the lead-in wires to provide smooth and rounded terminations, dipping the wires in a liquid suspension of glass frit, air drying, passing a blade between the wires to scrape away portions of the frit coating and expose bare wire adjacent the terminations, sealing the lead-in wires into one end of a length of glass tubing, dipping the coated lead-in wires into a primer cup to provide a coat of primer over the terminations and scraped portions, and then finishing the lamp.

An insulating sleeve encloses one of the wires, with the end of that wire extending beyond the open end of the sleeve. Formed at an angle from the other lead-in wire is a terminating portion which overlies and is spaced from the open end of the sleeve to provide a predetermined gap between the terminating portion and the end of the sleeved wire. The primer material is disposed to cover the open end of the sleeve and bridge the gap.

    • A compact photoflash unit comprising a plurality of flashlamps having lead-in wires connected to a circuit board containing thereon radiation-sensitive switching circuitry for sequentially flashing the lamps. Electrically conductive reflector panels are positioned between the lamps and the circuit board, and a sheet of electrically insulating material is interposed between the reflectors and the circuit board to prevent shorting of the circuitry on the circuit board by the conductive reflector. The insulating sheet, which may be of transparent plastic, is provided with T-shaped tabs which interlock with slots in the circuit board to secure the aligned position of the insulating sheet thereon. In assembling the photoflash unit, the insulating sheet is placed on the circuit board prior to mounting the lamps, and the T-shaped tabs of the sheet are inserted in the circuit board slots to secure the aligned location of holes in the insulating sheet with lamp-mounting eyelets in the circuit board.

    • A photoflash unit comprising a linear array of flashlamps mounted on a printed circuit board disposed within the longitudinal channel of an elongated housing member having an enclosing cover panel of light-transmitting material. The lamp-firing circuitry includes a common circuit conductor run connected to one lead-in wire of each of the lamps. The housing member includes reflector cavities adjacent to the lamps, and a continuous coating of electrically conductive reflective material covers the surfaces of the channel and reflector cavities for providing both reflective surfaces for flashing lamps and, by virtue of a connection between the common run and conductive coating, a shield to reduce the likelihood of accidental flashing of lamps by electrostatic charges. Additional protection against electrostatic charges is provided by a plurality of tapered holes in the wall of the housing channel through which the continuous conductive coating extends to the exterior surface of the housing, thereby extending electrical ground to the exterior of the unit.

    • A photoflash lamp array comprising a plurality of low voltage filament-type flashlamps mounted on a printed circuit board containing circuitry for sequentially igniting the flashlamps in response to successive low voltage firing pulses applied thereto. A plurality of reflectors respectively associated with the flashlamps are disposed between the lamps and the circuit board, with each reflector having an aperture in alignment with a corresponding aperture in the circuit board. The lamps are divided into upper and lower groups, with the circuit board having an upper connector coupled to the lower group of lamps and a lower connector coupled to the upper group of lamps, whereby one group of lamps functions as an extender for the other group to reduce the "red-eye" photographic effect. Connected in series with each but the first lamp of each group is a radiant-energy-activated quick-connect switch comprising a patch of heat shrinkable polymeric material attached to the circuit board and extending across a respective one of the apertures therein, a fixed contact attached to a first portion of the circuitry, and a resilient movable contact, such as a segment of spring wire, connected at one end to a second portion of the circuitry and having a bent segment at the other end which contacts the polymeric material in alignment with the respective aperture. The movable contact overlies the fixed contact and is held in a preenergized spaced apart relationship therefrom by the bent segment bearing against the polymeric material. Upon ignition of a flashlamp aligned with the respective aperture, the resulting radiant output rapidly melts away the heat shrinkable material from the aperture and thereby releases the movable contact to resiliently engage the fixed contact as the bent segment enters the circuit board aperture.
