    • Improved apparatus is disclosed for bonding tread material to tire carcasses utilizing a flexible heat conducting belt one end of which is secured to the tread and the remaining length thereof encircles the periphery of the tread and, by virtue of its heat conducting properties, assists in the bond of the tread to the tire carcass. The flexibility of the belt, as contrasted to a rigid matrix, for example, also permits the belt to conform to the tread configuration. One form of the invention disclosed also includes a second belt laminated to the first and having more strength so that the required pressure to assist in the curing operation can be accomplished without using a conventional pressure chamber. A further form of the invention discloses a laminated metallic type belt which again has one end secured to the tread and is wrapped about the periphery of the assembled tire. This form of the invention includes a metallic outer layer and a resilient heat conducting inner layer so that again both the required heat and pressure can be utilized. A still further form of the invention discloses shiftable plates carried by tire engaging plates which can be brought to bear against the edges of the tread at the line of juncture with the side wall. Heating units are also provided in this area, and the shiftable plates insure that the edges of the tread will be securely sealed and seated against the side wall of the tire during the curing operation.

    • Solar siding elements of very thin, high heat conductive sheet material are installed on the outer face of an exterior side wall of a building so as to form thereon a solar cover providing a plurality of passages between its inner face and the outer surface of the building wall. Air is caused to flow, by forced draft or convection, through the passages in intimate heat exchange contact with the interior surface of the solar cover, and thereby become heated. The air is constrained to enter the passages through an inlet manifold and to be discharged from the passages through an outlet manifold. For heating the building, the heated air from the outlet manifold may be discharged into the building, or into a heat sink for storing the solar generated heat, and increasing the air temperature before discharging the air into the building. In the latter case, the air may be passed once through the sink and into the building or recycled repeatedly back into the inlet manifold and through the passages and sink for accumulating more heat in the air and storage sink before discharging the air into the building. To reduce the temperature of the side wall of the building in hot weather, the heat normally absorbed by the air stream passing through the passages is discharged by discharging the heated air from the outlet manifold directly into the atmosphere, whereby the solar load on the wall is reduced, resulting in a reduction of air conditioning energy requirements.

    • An improved method of manufacturing or retreading pneumatic tires is disclosed wherein a precured tread component is bonded to a tire carcass or casing primarily by utilization of the residual heat in the precured tread component. The method includes the steps of molding or vulcanizing the tread in an apparatus such as a mold or other conventional type device designed to form and vulcanize a tire tread with or without the tread design. The method also includes providing the new tire carcass in finished form or a buffed casing, except for the tread, and conveying the precured tread at an elevated temperature to the tire carcass and applying the same thereon. In applying the tread to the carcass, the carcass is mounted on a mechanism capable of rotating the tire and precisely guiding the heated tread onto the carcass, and also includes stitching the tread to the carcass and using an intermediate bonding medium which is known in the trade as cushion rubber. Essentially the invention discloses utilization of the residual heat of the tread in the bonding zone to cure the cushion gum and effectuate a bond between the tread and the tire. Modifications of the invention are also disclosed wherein a prevulcanized tread strip is stored and subsequently reheated before application to the tire, as well as methods of preheating known re-enforcing material to create the bonding heat, as well as utilizing electric conductive means to accomplish the bonding of the tread to the carcass.

    • Seamless hollow molding rubber articles are produced by concurrently molding two article halves with mateable edges which extend toward each other. Portions of the mold plates and core are maintained continuously at the full vulcanizing heat until the halves of the articles have been vulcanized to about 60 percent of the optimum vulcanization of the material, except for thin strata defining the mateable edges. By cooling at the portions which form these strata, these portions are maintained at a lesser temperature to cause the reaction in these strata to progress slightly beyond the scorching or blowing stage to dimensional and volumetric stability. At this stage, the mateable faces of the edges are substantially free from the usual "skin" effect which effect would render them non-fusible. The mold is then opened, the core is removed, and the mold is reclosed. The article halves are resilient, but firm enough to force the strata of the mateable edges into firm pressure bonding and fusing contact without distortion of the remainder of the halves. Due to the limited amount of material in the strata, only a small total amount of heat is required to carry the vulcanization reaction of the strata to the same stage as that of the halves. Consequently, the heat of the mold and of the remainder of the halves is sufficient to fuse and vulcanize the mateable edge strata quickly and fully. The resultant bond of the edges and adjacent strata is homogeneous with the remainder of the halves.

    • A method and apparatus for applying pre-formed, uncured tread material at an elevated temperature to tire casings is disclosed wherein a number of tires may be processed simultaneously so as to utilize the advanced state of heat of the tread material to assist in curing of the tread, and bonding the same to the casing. The apparatus includes a plurality of stations and interconnecting conveyor means, whereby the uncured tread material can be applied to the tire casing and the assembled tire indexed into a curing mold for final curing, while simultaneously a separate station accomplishes application of tread material to a second casing which is then moved to a second station for curing purposes. The number of stations will be dictated only by the length of time involved in final curing, in that the time required for applying the treads to the casings is only a fraction of the time required for final curing. Thus, sufficient curing stations are provided to ensure that the assembled tires can be promptly transferred to the curing stations without appreciable diminishment of heat from the tread.

    • Plasticizable material is pressure molded into articles free from flash in mold cavities of specialized molds defined by separate mold sections with removable cores. Prior to and during molding, the sections are held clamped together to fully confine the material which is pressurized by reducing the volumetric capacity of each cavity. This pressurization is maintained until the material is set or cured, and may be increased before final set to forge or densify the material further. The method employs a conventional press and two gangs of specialized two-piece, multi-cavity molds. The molds of each gang are supported in a horizontal row, with their juxtaposed flat faces and parting planes disposed vertically, for movement of each mold section flatwise endwise of the row to open and closed positions. The mold sections are clamped closed by power means which apply extraneous clamping pressure independently of the press operation. The gangs are supported so that as one clamped gang is moved into molding position in the press the other clamped gang is moved out of the molding position to an unloading and recharged position wherein it is unloaded and recharged while molding is being effected by the gang in molding position. Each mold cavity has an entry passage which opens through the upper edge of its associated mold sections. In the charge position, predetermined charges of the material are introduced into the cavities, respectively, through the entry passages. The clamped gang is moved as a unit into the operating or mold space of the press. Therein, plungers, carried by the press platen and driven by the closing force of the press, enter the entry passages and move therealong so as to progressively reduce the volumetric capacities of the cavities concurrently and thereby pressurize and forge the material therein to the degree desired. The extraneous clamping pressure is sufficient pressure to prevent any escape of material from the cavities at the parting surfaces of the mold sections.
