    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which uses suppression of an effluent for the analysis of anions or cations in ion chromatography, and which reduces chemical regenerant consumption, waste amounts, and operational costs, and to provide an apparatus for it.
      SOLUTION: The analysis method of ionic species in an aqueous sample stream and the apparatus include: (a) the step of chromatographically separating the ionic species in the sample stream in the presence of an aqueous eluent containing an electrolyte to form a chromatographic effluent, (b) the step of suppressing the electrolyte in the effluent by flowing the effluent through a suppressor to form a suppressed effluent, (c) the step of detecting the ionic species in the suppressed effluent, and (d) the step of regenerating the suppressor by flowing a mixture of a gas stream and a regenerant liquid stream through the suppressor.

    • The application relates to a method and device for ion chromatography or pretreatment. In the chromatographic separation stage, ions of an injected sample are eluted through a separation column using an electrolyte as the eluent. In the suppression stage, electrical conductivity of the electrolyte is suppressed but not that of the separated ions so that the latter may be determined by a conductivity cell. The device comprises a self regenerating electrodialytic membrane suppressor (17) with an upstream portion sample stream flow channel defined on both sides by ion exchange membranes (34, 36) flanked by downstream portion ion receiving and source flow channels. In order to increase the current-efficiency without the detrimental effects of excess heat generation, there is provided a lower electrical resistance in the upstream portion compared to the electrical resistance of the downstream portion.
