    • A method and apparatus for determining and displaying icons representing files containing text, such as e-mail, web pages, text documents, word-processor documents, etc. In particular, the system determines the content of the text by examining words in the document. For example, if words relating to cars appear several times in the document, then the document's topic probably relates to car. Next, the system searches in a database of icons, which are labeled according to type. For example, the database may contain graphics relating to transportation (cars, planes, trains, etc.) computers (hard disk, monitor, keyboard, etc.), animals (mammal, reptile, amphibian), and many other categories. The system chooses the closest icon available and displays it as the icon representing the text document. (For example, the system may associate the document on cars with a car icon, and the car icon is displayed in appropriate regions of the desktop such as in file listings, desktop shortcuts, menus task bars, etc.).

    • A system and method for automatic ways of prioritizing the presentation of windows on a graphical user interface (GUI) and for prioritizing and accessing information stored in cache that is used by a web browser. The viewing (tiling) priority of windows, the size of windows, and the position of windows on a GUI are automatically determined from the following criteria: the time the window was first opened, the time the window was last opened, the length of time the window was visible on the screen, the percentage visibility of the window, the amount of scrolling the window has undergone, the content of the window, the time of day, the number of window accesses, and/or some mathematical function of these criteria. Additionally, these same criteria are applied to cached information associated with web pages so that more “relevant” cached web pages are automatically stored in cache for longer periods of time before being discarded in a finite sized cache. The cached information is more quickly accessible by hitting a “back-like” button that shows more relevant (i.e. higher priority) information before less relevant information.

    • Information presentation system comprises a computer device having a display terminal for providing a graphical user interface (GUI), capable of generating a cluster of items comprising graphical or textual elements for display thereof according to a fractal appearance. Each item in a cluster represents information having a degree of relatedness with information represented by other items in a cluster. A control mechanism is provided for controlling the spatial extent, nesting and arrangement of items within a cluster according to a specified criteria, which spatial extent and arrangement is controlled to provide optimal display and conserve screen display space on the display terminal. Users may manually enter a criteria for organizing and adjusting the spatial extent of a cluster in order to provide continuous display space on the computer display terminal. The invention may be implemented in text editors to provide a multiresolution annotation feature for portable and lap/palm-top computer devices having pen-based or keyboard based inputs.
