    • Water-soluble copolymers which are obtainable by free-radical solution polymerization ofa) 10-99.5% by weight of at least one vinylimidazole of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are identical or different and are H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, monomers of the formula ##STR2## where R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are identical or different and are H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl or together form a ring of 3 to 5 methylene groups,N-vinyloxazolidone, N-vinyltriazole, 4-vinylpyridine N-oxide or mixtures of said monomers,b) 0-89.5% by weight of other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers andc) 0.5-30% by weight of at least one monomer which acts as crosslinker and has at least two non-conjugated ethylenic double bondsin water and/or polar organic solvents in the presence of polymerization regulators, using from 0.1 to 5 parts by weight of polymerization regulator per 1 part by weight of crosslinker, a process for preparing the copolymers by free-radical solution polymerization of the monomers in the presence of polymerization regulators and the use of the copolymers as additive to detergents.

    • Polymers of alkyl-1-vinylimidazoles, a process for preparing polymers of alkyl-1-vinylimidazoles by free-radical polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (a) 10-100% by weight of at least one alkyl-1-vinylimidazole and (b) 0-90% by weight of 1-vinylpyrrolidone, 1-vinylcaprolactam, 1-vinyltriazole, 1-vinylimidazole, 1-vinyloxazolidinone or mixtures thereof, (c) 0-30% by weight of other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and (d) 0-10% by weight of a monomer containing at least 2 monoethylenic double bonds in water, at least one C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alcohol or mixtures thereof, and the use of polymers which comprise at least 10% by weight of an alkyl-1-vinylimidazole as copolymerized unit as additive to detergents to inhibit transfer of dyes during the washing process.

    • A composition for the surface treatment of metals and for the deposition of metals or metal alloys and plastics surfaces comprises a) at least one polymer as component A, comprising at least one structural unit of the formula (I)  where this structural unit may be part of a polymer main chain or may be bound to a polymer main chain via an anchor group, and  M is hydrogen or an ammonium or metal cation; b) water or another solvent which is suitable for dissolving, dispersing, suspending or emulsifying the polymer (component A), as component B; c) if required, surface-active compounds, dispersants, suspending media and/or emulsifiers as component C;  either d) if required, a salt, an acid or a base based on transition metal cations, transition metal oxoanions, fluorometallates or lanthanoids as component D, and/or e) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, sulfonic acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid as component E, or a base and/or f) at least one metal oxide and/or metal salt as component F. Furthermore, in a process for the surface treatment of metals and in a process for the deposition of metals or metal alloys on a metal surface or plastics surface, the metal surface or plastics surface is brought into contact with a polymer (component A). Moreover, polymers (component A) are used for the surface treatment of metals and for the deposition of metals or metal alloys on a metal surface or plastics surface.
