    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve timing device capable of reducing electric power consumption by valve timing control when stopping an engine. SOLUTION: A convergence determination of intake valve phase control is performed by a comparison between a phase deviation ¾ΔIV(θ)¾ and a convergence determining value θj of an intake valve to a target phase (S140). In convergence (when determining as YES of S140), a determination is made that an intake valve phase reaches the target phase, and since a phase variation in a required camshaft is set to zero, an actuator operation quantity is also set to zero (S160). Thus, when stopping the engine when the target phase is a fixed value, after convergence of the intake valve phase control, operation of an actuator is stopped. When further stopping the engine, the convergence determining value is set by switching when stopping the engine and when operating the engine so that the convergence determination of the intake valve phase control becomes gentler than when operating the engine (S120 and S130).
