      SOLUTION: An engine ECU executes a program including steps of: (S107) estimating noise generating time; (S108) subtracting a noise waveform model from a normalized vibration waveform on the basis of the estimated noise generating time; (S116) calculating knock strength N on the basis of a result of comparing the subtracted vibration waveform with the knock waveform model when there is no angle of becoming smaller than zero in an integral value in a subtracted waveform (NO in S110); (S120) determining that the knocking is generated when the knock strength N is larger than a predetermined determining value (YES in S118); and (S124) determining that the knocking is not generated when the knock strength N is not larger than the predetermined determining value (NO in S118).

      SOLUTION: An engine ECU 200 comprises a band pass filter (1) 410 extracting only the vibration of a first frequency band A, a band pass filter (2) 420 extracting only the vibration of a second frequency band B, a band pass filter (3) 430 extracting only the vibration of a third frequency band C, and a band pass filter (4) 440 extracting only the vibration of a fourth frequency band D including the first to third frequency bands. The engine ECU 200 determines whether knocking occurs or not based on the peak values of the intensity of vibration in the vibration waveform of the fourth frequency band D and the synthetic waveform of the first to third frequency bands.

The maximum values V(MAX) are removed and the knock judging level V(KD) is calculated over and over until the knock judging level V(KD) agrees with the maximum value V(MAX).
