    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an engine which effectively prevents the deposit of fuel with a high sulfur content from being accumulated at an injection section.
      SOLUTION: The controller is provided with a fuel injection valve 13 which directly injects fuel in a cylinder of an engine, a sulfur detecting sensor 45 which detects the amount of sulfur contained in the fuel, and a temperature calculating section 6a which calculates the temperature of the injection section of the fuel injection valve, and a spark plug 15 executing operation for increasing or decreasing the temperature of the injection section, a valve timing varying mechanism 31 on a suction side and a high pressure fuel pump 133. The controller is also provided with an ECU 6 which increases the temperature of the injection section by controlling the sparking time of the spark plug on an advance side when the amount of sulfur contained in the fuel calculated based on the value of the sulfur detecting sensor exceeds a predetermined value and the temperature of the injection section calculated by the temperature calculating section is lower than the predetermined value by controlling the valve timing of an inlet valve 16 on an advanced side, and by controlling the pressure of supplied fuel by the high pressure fuel pump on a high pressure side.

The apparatus controls fuel injection quantity so that the quantity injected by the afterburning increases when the ethanol concentration is high, in comparison with when the concentration is low. Specifically, when the concentration is high, the number of fuel injection during the expansion stroke is increased in comparison with when the concentration is low.
