    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ceramic filter provided with a catalyst which realizes low coefficient of thermal expansion, light weight and activation of the catalyst in an early stage without decreasing the high porosity of a filter base material by using a ceramic material on which the catalyst component can be directly deposited. SOLUTION: A honeycomb filter base material having many cells each separated by porous barrier walls from others is subjected to the process of substituting elements except for the structural elements for at least one kind or more kinds of elements in the structural elements so as to obtain a ceramic material in which catalyst metals can be directly deposited on the substituted elements. For example, the ceramic material is prepared by substituting W or Co for a part of Si in cordierite, and then a catalyst such as noble metals is directly deposited on W to obtain the ceramic filter with the catalyst. The obtained filter is free from pressure loss, increase in the coefficient of thermal expansion or increase in the weight due to the formation of a coating layer and has a small heat capacity.
