    • The invention includes an exchange system, a guidewire anchoring means and a method of use for catheters exchangeable over a guidewire (55). The guidewire anchoring means restricts movement between the guidewire (55) and the anchoring means. The anchoring means comprises a shaft (35) with a longitudinal lumen (80) therethrough, the lumen (80) being in fluid communication with a balloon (25 or 30) disposed on the distal end of the shaft (35). A tubular split housing (5 or 10) surrounds the distal end of the shaft (35) and adheres to the balloon (25 or 30), the balloon (25 or 30) being sized to expand to a larger size than the inside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10). The inside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10) is sized to slidably receive a catheter, while the outside diameter of the split housing (5 or 10) is sized to slidably fit within a guide catheter (50 ).

    • A medical catheter including a continuous liner defining a guidewire lumen. The liner has a constant inner diameter and a constant outer diameter. A continuous layer is braided over the liner and encapsulated between the liner and a bump layer. The bump layer has a proximal segment, and a bump section. The bump section has a transition zone at the proximal end of the bump section. The proximal segment has a distal end affixed to the proximal end of the bump section. The proximal segment of the bump layer has an outer diameter which is less than the outer diameter of the bump section of the bump layer. The transition zone has an outer diameter which smoothly transitions from the outer diameter of the distal end of the proximal segment of the bump layer to the larger outer diameter at the distal end of the transition zone. The bump layer is encapsulated between the outer jacket layer and the braided layer. The outer jacket layer has a constant outer diameter and an inner diameter conforming to the variable outer diameter of the bump layer. The bump layer is made of a material with a greater flexural modulus than that of the outer jacket layer, such that the flexibility of the catheter is greater at the distal end of the catheter than at the proximal end of the catheter.

    • An apparatus and method of making a thinwall guide catheter useful in delivery of therapeutic devices through a body vessel. The method comprises braiding a flat wire over the surface of a cylindrical core, placing a heat bondable polymer tube over the braid, surrounding the polymer tube with a heat shrink sleeve, heating the assembly to a temperature and for a time period sufficient to expand the core into braid interstices and bond the polymer tube to substantially only the outer surface of the braid and finally removing the heat shrink sleeve and core. The resulting guide catheter has approximately half the wall thickness of prior guide catheters and has excellent column stiffness and kink resistance.

    • An expandable percutaneous introducer sheath is disclosed which can be selectively enlarged to accommodate a range of sizes of interventional devices. The introducer sheath can retain an enlarged size without requiring an additional support member. The introducer sheath comprises an outer tube which contains expandable gaps along the length of the outer tube, expandable leaflets which are connected to the outer tube, an inner tubular member which is insertable into the outer tube, and a detent means to retain the enlarged size of the outer tube. The outer tube has a cross-sectional profile which is both kink resistant and minimizes the size of the puncture wound in the vasculature by providing a helix in the outer tube. An inner tubular member is inserted into the lumen of the outer tube and, because of the interference fit of the lumen outer tube to the outer diameter of the inner tubular member, the lumen of the outer tube enlarges at the expandable gaps.
