    • A thin walled metal container is formed with a bottom wall having a substantially flat central panel connected to a container side wall through an annular rest radius defining an annular support surface for the container. The annular rest radius includes an outer connecting web portion leading into the container side wall and an inner connecting web portion leading into the central panel. In the preferred embodiment, these connecting web portions are permanently joined to each other by welding or adhesive bonding to resist column loading forces acting through the side wall and internal pressure forces acting through the central panel which have the effect of unrolling the annular rest radius. Since these curved opposing portions of the rest radius are immobilized to resist column and internal pressurization, a thinner gauge metal can be used to satisfy design parameters and achieve cost and metal reduction savings. A method of reforming an annular rest radius in the bottom wall of a drawn and ironed container is also disclosed.

    • An easy-open wall is provided for a container and comprises curvilinear score means in such wall defining at least the major part of the peripheral outline of a panel which is partially severable from the wall to define a dispensing opening in the wall. A tab is attached in a nondetachable manner against the wall outwardly of the panel with the tab having a forward portion which overlies part of the panel and having a rear portion. The rear portion is easily grasped and lifted to urge the forward portion against the panel to thereby sever the major portion of said panel along the score means and move it within the container with a portion of the wall holding the panel securely thereto. The tab may be provided with means for fastening it flatly against the wall after using the tab to sever the panel.

    • An easy-open, reseable closure assembly for a beverage can (10) comprises a metal lid (12) and two threadedly connected molded plastic closure elements (40, 60) with engageable annular reseal surfaces (46, 76). The lid is scored (30) to define a circular tear panel (28) and a hinge (32). The spout element (40) is attached to the lid (12) with the bottom surface of the cap element (60) directly above and aligned with the periphery of the tear panel (28). Rotation of the cap element (60) by a user ruptures the tear panel and pivots the tear panel (28) downward about the hinge (32), providing a passage through the spout element (40) for pouring and driking. Initial rupture and rupture propagation of the tear panel (28) is controlled by the spacing of the cap element (60) from the tear panel (28) and their configurations. When the cap element (60) is replaced on the spout (40), reseal surfaces (46, 76) engage.

    • An easy-open construction for a container wherein a panel principally defined by a rupturable score line in a wall is opened by operating a tab having one end adapted to press against the panel at a position spaced from the score line and overlying only a small portion of the opening left by the panel in its opened position. The tab and panel remain secured to the wall after the panel has been moved to its open position.
