    • A switch comprises a switching module coupled to a plurality of ports. The switching module receives and forwards a plurality of packets through the ports. The switch also comprises a management unit comprising a processor and an agent executable by the processor. The agent causes the processor to monitor each packet received by the switching module and determine whether each such packet contains a predetermined fingerprint. Upon determining that a packet contains the predetermined fingerprint, the processor causes additional information to be included in a copy of the fingerprinted packet and forwarded to a predetermined address. The switching module also forwards the packet containing the predetermined fingerprint, but without the additional information, to an address corresponding to a destination address contained in the packet. A method of programming the switches is also described as well as a management workstation used to program the switches and analyze the fingerprinted packets.

    • A method for logging trace events of a network device in a network is described herein. A plurality of log events may be generated based on a source level. The plurality of log events is stored to a log buffer of the network device. The log buffer is monitored for a trigger event, which is a condition in the network. It is determined whether the trigger event is detected. Upon detecting the trigger event, one or more log events of the plurality of log events in an ex-ante window of the log buffer are determined. A log event of the one or more log events is provided to a system log. Upon determining the trigger event is not detected, it is determined whether the one or more log events of the plurality of log events in the ex-ante window satisfy a log level. A severity of the source level is lower than a severity of the log level.

    • A method and device for controlling the transmission across a data link is disclosed. Link Layer protocol formatting in a variation on a "sliding window" protocol is implemented. In data communication equipment, a protocol controller device is described, coupling a first input/output means, for coupling to a local data terminal equipment, to a second input/output means, for coupling said local data terminal equipment to a communication link, comprising: first porting means for transferring information in to and out from said first input/output means; second porting means for transferring said information to and from said second input/output means; switching means coupled to said first porting means for controlling an input/output information transfer path through said porting means; information holding means, coupled to said first porting means and to said second porting means, for pipelining said information through said device; and controlling means, coupled to said holding means and said second porting means, for protocol formatting of said information. The present invention includes a method for controlling data transmission using an open systems interconnection model, comprising: providing link layer sliding window protocol formatting of information to be transmitted such that said protocol provides transmission error control; and providing link layer sliding window protocol formatting of information to be transmitted such that said protocol provides transmission flow control and fully decoded control information.
