During operation, a pump (90) continuously feeds slurry under pressure through the inlet of the first press assembly to cause liquid within the first stage slurry upstream of the two-part piston assembly (18) to be radially expressed through the foraminous container (14). After a suitable amount of liquid has been extracted from the first stage slurry, batch processing of the partially dewatered slurry will commence.

    • An improved juice extractor is adapted to separate the juice of a fruit pomace from the pulp thereof. The juice extractor has an elongated flexible open-ended sleeve positioned adjacent a bearing or backup surface, and having an entrance end adapted to receive the pomace. The sleeve is formed of a foraminous material permeable to the juice to be extracted, but substantially impermeable to the pulp of such fruit. The cross-sectional area of this sleeve decreases toward its exit end. A plurality of roller members are adapted to press proximate portions of the sleeve against the bearing surface, and are also mounted for movement along the sleeve. The action of the moving roller members causes the pomace to be advanced along the sleeve. Such movement of the roller members, coupled with the decreasing cross-sectional area of the sleeve, gently squeezes the pomace to separate the juice from the pulp. The juice passes through the sleeve and is collected. The pulp is discharged through the exit end of the sleeve.

A removable housing (14) is mounted over the drives, the removable housing including two spaced apart housing portions (76, 78). A platen (170), a press bag (18), and a press bag support (218-248) are located in the pressing chamber between the housing portions. A portion (168) of the press drive extends through an aperture in the sidewall (78.41) of one of the two housing portions, the platen being removably secured to the portion (168). A process (16) is removably secured to the top of the other housing portion (76). The processor includes a grater, an impeller, and a two part or clam-shell discharge chute (100, 106) which, during operation of the grater (84) and impeller (86-90), causes grated pulp material to be discharged into the press bag. A hopper cover (158) and guards (276, 286) to either side of the pressing chamber are provided, which cover and guards must be in place before commencement of the operation of the apparatus. A juice collector (22) is disposed beneath a trough (80) at the bottom of the pressing chamber. Manually engagable start, stop and grind time varying controls (294, 296, 304) are provided, which controls initiate the operation of a controller supported by the frame.

When the press racks are moved towards one another to squeeze juice from the liquid containing material which is disposed within the filter bag assemblies, the juice will flow into a collector (176) mounted below the press racks. The press assembly is capable of inverting the press racks and filter bag assemblies after the press racks have been moved away from each other, the residue from within the filter bags being discharged onto a conveyer (220) mounted below the collector which has been moved from its operative position below the press racks to an inoperative position to the sides of the press racks.

    • A novel filter bag assembly (10) which may be used in a press (12) for squeezing juice from fruit. The bag assembly facilitates the discharge of a press cake (PC) from within the bag when it is inverted. The bag assembly includes a bag (50) and an inner liner made from a plurality of flaps (64, 65, 66), there being at least two flaps on each of the wide sides (58, 60) of the bag, the flaps being arranged in a tiered fashion so that the lower edge of one flap will overlie the top edge of an adjacent flap. The bag assembly is utilized with a press having a plurality of press racks or plates (14) which are mounted for movement towards and away from each other and also for movement from an upright normal position to an inverted position, each rack carrying first mounting structure (68) on the top edge (14.1) of the rack, the bag assemblies being provided with second mounting structure which cooperate with the first mounting structure so that the bag assemblies may be supported by and between adjacent racks. First retaining structure (76) is carried by the bottom edges (14.3) of the press racks, and second retaining structure (80) is carried by the bottom (52) of the bags, the retaining structures engaging each other so that when the racks are inverted the bottom of the bag will not drop permitting the press cake within the bag to peel away from the liner and drop from the bag.

    • Method and apparatus for infusing fruits (which may include vegetables) with sugar. The apparatus includes a series of interconnected tanks (10, 12, 14 and 16). A stratified column of infusing liquor is caused to flow from a tank (50) via variable output pump (52) through fruit which is placed within the tanks to cause the fruit to become saturated with sugar. In addition, the fruit is placed in a plumping liquid in the tanks prior to infusing and the infusing liquor will drive the plumping liquid in front of it. The fruit may be conditioned in various ways prior to placement in the tanks, which conditioning may remove fruit juice from the fruit, the fruit juice being collected in a tank (36) for subsequent use. Alternatively, if fruit juice is not removed from the fruit during a conditioning process, fruit juice is extracted from the downstream portion of the plumping liquid.

A filter assembly (40) is carried by the frame below the press chamber for additionally filtering juice. The compact juice machine further includes an electrical controller (42) for controlling the operation of the hydraulic cylinder assembly and the shredder.
