    • An optical recording medium includes a substrate and a plurality of recording layers laminated via at least intermediate layers, at least one of the recording layers other than a recording layer farthest from a light incidence plane among the plurality of recording layers containing at least one metal M selected from a group consisting of Ni, Cu, Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, In, Sn, W, Pb, Bi, Zn and La and an element X which can combine with the metal M upon being irradiated with a laser beam for recording data, thereby forming a crystal of a compound of the element X with the metal M. According to the thus constituted optical recording medium, it is possible to record data in and reproduce from a farthest recording layer from a light incidence plane in a desired manner and it is possible to record data in and reproduce from recording layer(s) other than the farthest recording layer from the light incidence plane in a desired manner.

    • An optical recording medium includes a support substrate, and a light transmission layer 12 that is disposed so as to come in contact with the support substrate. At least one of a refractive index of the support substrate and a refractive index of the light transmission layer, and an extinction coefficient of the support substrate and an extinction coefficient of the light transmission layer is different. As such, according to the invention, a reflective layer is not formed between the support substrate and the light transmission layer, such that the support substrate and the light transmission layer directly come in contact with each other. Accordingly, since at least one of the refractive index and the extinction coefficient is different, reflection occurs at the interface between the support substrate and the light transmission layer. Therefore, data held by a plurality of pits, that are arranged on the support substrate in a spiral shape or a concentric shape, can be correctly read out.

    • The invention relates to an optical head and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus for recording information in an optical recording medium or reproducing information recorded therein and a method of optical recording/reproduction utilizing the same. The invention provides an optical head and an optical recording/reproducing apparatus capable of reproducing an RF signal of high quality by eliminating a noise component superimposed on reflected light from a recording medium and a method of optical recording/reproduction utilizing the same. The optical head has an RF signal extraction circuit for extracting an RF signal including information recorded in a rotating recording medium. The RF signal extraction circuit has a low-pass filter for eliminating the RF signal from an electrical signal obtained by performing photoelectric conversion of laser light irradiated to and reflected by the recording medium to extract a noise signal and a differential amplifier circuit connected to the low-pass filter to perform a differential operation between the electrical signal and the noise signal.
