    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct down backlight which can not visualize a tubular light source (fluorescent lamp or the like) and can uniformize the luminance from a display unit, and to provide a light diffusion plate for the direct down backlight.
      SOLUTION: An anisotropic diffusion plate 24 of constituting the direct down backlight unit is arranged between the display unit 1 and a plurality of tubular light sources 22 for illuminating the display unit from the back surface. The anisotropic diffusion plate includes an anisotropic scattering layer which includes a continuous phase C and particulate dispersion phases D having refractive indexes different from each other, wherein the average aspect ratio of the particulate dispersion phases D is larger than 1 and the major axis direction of the particulate dispersion phases D is oriented in one side direction. When the light scattering characteristic in the major axis direction of the particulate dispersion phase is denoted by Fx(θ) and the light scattering characteristic in the direction vertical to the major axis direction of the particulate dispersion phase is denoted by Fy(θ) in the scattering characteristic F(θ) which presents the relation between scattering angle θ and scattering light intensity F, the anisotropic scattering layer is satisfied by the following conditions: the degree of anisotropy F
      18 (Fy(18°)/Fx(18°))>2 at scattering angle θ=18°; the haze≥95%; and the thickness=0.5 to 5 mm.
