    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent for an ink jet recording paper made of a cationic polyurethane resin equally excellent in abrasion resistance, dimensional stability at printing, heat resistance, resistance to solvents and a binder capacity to inorganic fillers or the like to say nothing of ink fixing properties and water resistance. SOLUTION: This coating agent for an ink jet recording paper consists of (A) a constitutional unit derived from an organic polyisocyanate, (B) a constitutional unit derived from a hydroxy compound having at least two active hydrogen atoms reactive with a NCO group and (C) a constitutional unit derived from a polyhydroxy compound, the molecule of which has a tertiary amino group, which is neutralized by an acid or turned into a quaternary one by a quaternarily turning agent and, at the same time, has at least two active hydrogen atoms reactive with a NCO group and includes a cationic water-based polyurethane resin obtained by extending the chain of a cationic urethane prepolymer, the branching density of which is 0.08 to 0.25 per 1,000 atomic weight, with the water.
