    • Apparatus for successively embossing characters onto a tape in response to depression of keys representative of the characters is described. The apparatus includes a rectangular keyboard and an embossing wheel having about its periphery an annular array of embossing dies corresponding to the characters to be produced. The embossing wheel is normally continually rotated during operation of the mechanism, and each of the keys has a stem which cooperates with a stop on the embossing wheel for interrupting the rotation of the wheel with the proper die positioned at an embossing station upon the depression of any one of the keys. A cam assembly is activated by the depression of one of the keys to then cause the character positioned at the embossing station to be embossed on a tape located at such station and also to advance the tape through the embossing station for appropriately spacing successively embossed characters.

    • 1,197,638. Selective printing. DYMO INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 50758/67. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; machines for embossing plastics materials; variable letter-spacing arrangements.-A tool for selective embossing of plastics tapes 34, Fig. 2, having an upper and lower embossing die disc 55, 56 is provided with a proportional letter-spacing device including a pair of tape feed rollers 72, 74 which are actuated in the clockwise direction by a clutched arm 80, Fig. 4, through a link 122 which is articulated to a lever 110 pivotally mounted on a grip 100, the link 122 having a nose 124 which co-operates with radial projections 126 disposed below the lower disc 56 and diametrally opposite the selected embossable character 48 at the embossing station 46. Radial projections whose lengths correspond to the width of the embossable characters 48 limit the displacement of the link 122 and hence the angular displacement of the feed rollers 72, 74. In another embodiment the arm 80 and its associated clutch 82 (Fig. 5) are replaced by a pawl and ratchet mechanism 208, Fig. 9, which is actuated by a lever 206. The lever 206 has a lug 224 which co-operates with an axial projection 226 depending from the lower disc 56, the length of the projection being proportional to the width of the selected embossable character. Depression of the actuating lever 200 pivots the lever 206 clockwise until the latter abuts the projection 226, the pivotal movement being imparted to a pawl 216 which displaces the ratchet wheel 210 a number of teeth to rotate the feed rollers 72, 74, Fig. 4, through a corresponding arc. The operating lever 200 is permitted further movement to complete its embossing function by compressing a spring 230 and lost-motion pin- and-slot arrangement 232, 234. On release of the operating lever a second pawl 220 displaces the ratchet wheel 210 a further number of teeth to complete the feeding or spacing of the tape 34. Index setting arrangements.-Following indexing of the embossing die discs 55, 56, Fig. 4, to present a selected embossable character 48 at the embossing station 46 the grip 100 carrying an amboss 50 is depressed against the bias of a spring 104 to press the lower die, which is disposed on a radial arm 58, into contact with the upper die. Web feeding; guiding and cutting arrangements.-The plastics tape 34, Fig. 4, which is drawn off a roll 36 disposed in a magazine 38 is passed over a guide 68 between the nip of feed rollers 72, 74, displaced angularly through different amounts by a clutched arm 80, link 122, lever 110 and manually-operated grip 100 and thereafter advanced in one of guides 142, 144 to the embossing station 46. The guides 142, 144 which cope with plastics tapes of different widths are selected on vertical displacement of a control button 150, Fig. 3, which pivots an integral arm 146 to locate one or the other of the guides 142, 144 in the path of travel of the tape. The embossed tape 34 is severed by blades 162, 164 on depression of a lever 170 which lifts an anvil 166 into contact with the blades 162, 164. Blade 162 severs the tape and the blade 164 establishes a tab at the severed end for facilitating the subsequent removal of a backing strip. Visual indicating arrangements.-The selected embossable characters 48, Fig. 3, which are disposed at the embossing station 46 are indicated in a window 64. Accenting and like arrangements.-To emboss a diacresis mark 248, Fig. 3, in conjunction with an embossable character, the lower disc 56 is provided with a radial projection 250 which prevents the link 122, Fig. 4, from actuating the arm 80 of the tape feeding device 70, so that no feeding or spacing of the tape takes place. Spacing of the tape is effected after subsequent embossing of the associated embossable character.
